I just installed the Hitachi Travelstar 7K320 320 GB i pop in the windows 64 bit dvd, it goes through the windows setup, than asks me if i want to install, windows than gives me this : setup did not find any harddisk drives installed in your computer and says press F3 to restart the computer.

Now I believe some of you guyshave this one in your m15x right?

is there drivers or something I need to install before I can install XP?

    Thanks in advance.

Yeah. Unfortunately the XP Installation CDs are becoming a little outdated when it comes to new hardware.

Below are instructions I've copy + pasted from the one I wrote out earlier. The steps below will require a USB floppy drive to load the SATA drivers from, but if you do not have one, you can always slipstream the drivers onto a CD using nLite.

For more information about nLite, click here.
There was another person who installed XP (downgraded from Vista, rather) on his m15x. You can use the thread as a reference if you'd like-- here.

    --

    1. Download the XP Intel RAID drivers. (I have uploaded this for you on my server so you won't have to go through finding it in MyHive.)

    2. Extract the files onto a floppy disk (you'll need a USB floppy drive connected into your m15x.)

    3. Boot into your Windows XP Installation CD.

    4. Make sure at this point that your USB floppy drive is plugged in with the floppy disk you've made in step 2 inside of it.

    5. In the first stage of Setup, you will see a series of blue and gray text-based screens. In the first step, you will be asked to press [F6] if you need to install any third-party SCSI or RAID drivers. These are types of hard drive controllers. Press F6 during that time and allow it time to load onto the following screen.

    6. When you get onto this screen, press " S" to " Specify Additional Devices."

    7. Now it should load the drivers from your USB floppy drive. It'll bring up a list of drivers and you will be asked to pick the one that suits your needs. For this particular system, you will want to choose: " Intel(R) 82801HEM/HBM SATA AHCI Controller (Mobile ICH8M-E/M)"

    8. The rest of the steps should be straight-forward if you've ever formatted a disk before. If not, you can always refer to this:
    http://4help.alienware.com/cgi-bin/alienware.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=537&p_created=1070322628&p_sid=LU5w***j&p_accessibility=0&p_redirect=&p_lva=&p_sp=cF9zcmNoPTEmcF9zb3J0X2J5PSZwX2dyaWRzb3J0PSZwX3Jvd19jbnQ9MzgsMzgmcF9wcm9kcz0mcF9jYXRzPTAmcF9wdj0mcF9jdj0mcF9zZWFyY2hfdHlwZT1hbnN3ZXJzLnNlYXJjaF9mbmwmcF9zY2ZfNj0yMDUmcF9wYWdlPTEmcF9zZWFyY2hfdGV4dD1yZWluc3RhbGxpbmcgWFA*&p_li=&p_topview=1

Once you've installed Windows XP onto your computer, install the drivers in their correct order. All of these drivers could be found in your MyHive or in the mini-MyHive here.

Good luck and hope that helps.

You're not installing a 64-bit version of XP, are you? :|

yes, I am installing XP 64. And I've tried using a floopy, it doesn't work.

after I have slipped streamed it, how do I get it back into an ISO file?

or do I just copy the files to a disk?

    Follow the guide from here:
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows/resolving-setup-did-not-find-any-hard-disk-drives-during-windows-xp-installation/

I'm fairly sure you'll be able to install 64-bit XP but I'm not too sure if there is much driver support for it. I'm sure findvikas has pioneered a way to get driver support for 64-bit Vista, but I'm not sure if it will work the same with 64-bit XP. I'm more than willing to help you look for the drivers if you need help (not now though-- 12:26AM and I have a morning class tomorrow). Just let me know if you need any help and I'll work on it asap.

There are intel drivers for XP x64 edition, for the "F6" functionality.

Link for the ICH8M chipset downloads: here

You'll want to get the "64-bit Floppy Configuration Utility" from the "Utilities, Tools and Examples" section.

I'm not sure how different this is from the version Vikas posted, but, with that file, you should be able to follow a similar guide to installing XP x64 onto your system.

The file is a .zip and contains the INF and necessary support files for the drivers. you can directly copy these to a diskette or slipstream them into an XP x64 installer CD using nlite.

Good luck, let us know how it goes.

I wasn't able to find everything, but I found some.

I'll update this post as I find more drivers.

You'll want that from Mystik's post, Steven. Unzip the zip file and then nLite those files onto the disk. The one that Mystik gave you should be the 64-bit version of the one that was on my guide.

ok, thanks guys (I mean REALLY, Thanks), just got my smartbay hdd cage, so I'm going to get things going.

No I already installed vsita 64 on on primary partition of the hdd.

    Partition 1(primary)200gb Vista 64
Partition 2(primary)90gb Will have xp64 as soon as I do all this.
and than I created another 10 gb hd, but I think Ill delete it.

Now my question will be, If I leave vista32 on the 120gb that came with the system, and use that in the smartbay hdd cage, than will I be able to boot up into vista32 from there?

I would like to be able to boot up into vista 32, 64, and XP64. Should I be ok? Or is there something more I need for that, and/or some order in which I install things? Should I install vista64 off of the 320gb before I install all these drivers, or will I be ok since it is on a separate primary partition?

Or should I just install XP and Vista on the same partition?

I know that sounds like a bunch of rubbish i just said, bare with me tho, :p

and Thanks so much again. :)
