One of my friends just did the Windows 8 learning lounge. I've never seen him so frustrated...and he's an engineer.

I don’t care for apps, Metro, or whatever. I have an M15x on Win 7. I press the Alien head button, I wait, I press the Civilization V button, I wait, I game for hours. Sometimes it’s AutoCAD or SAP2000, for hours. I want a Windows that is fast, stable, and doesn’t consume system resources. I don’t want to think about it or even know it’s there.

I’m about to buy an M14x, so for me there is zero cost for Win 8 and I know the drivers will work.
Apparently you can set up Win 8 to look just like Win 7, so zero learning curve. Unless you guys have a better suggestion, I was gonna get Start8 for $5 and get the Start button and boot directly to desktop. From what I read on Ars, Tom’s, and other reputable testing sites, Win 8:

    1. will boot faster
    2. idle longer and at lower power (no tick)
    3. have better security (improved DEP and ASLR’s)
    4. use memory more efficiently (deduplication)

Apparently, Win 8 64 uses 20GB on your disk, just like Win 7 64. So, what am I missing here? For my particular circumstances, wouldn’t Win 8 be a better choice? Thanks in advance for any advice.

W8 also uses half the ram that W7 does.

Guys I don't know if this has already appeared or not but since the thread is about windows 8 and alienware read this:

Nvidia driver is killing my Windows 8 Pro

Seems more driver's issues and OS issues are appearing :(

Nvidia are notorious for causing problems with an OS launch lol.

Raid xpert works on my end, though it goes through a browser interface so it's maybe a bit easier to pull off.

Other than tolerating how inefficient the dumbed-down Windows 8 GUI is, my M18x R1 works flawlessly with NVIDIA ForceWare 310.33 drivers and GTX 680M SLI. An upgrade in place was an absolute failure, but a clean install has been completely free of problems. With Start8 installed and avoidance of the tiled Start screen, it's not much different than Windows 7 with Aero turned off.

finally got the graphics switching to work somehow, I'll have to do some research and figure out how I did it. :p

Looks like a killer setup Mr.Fox and congrats on those new 680m's!! Quick question, where did you get those CPU and GPU monitoring gadgets? They are pretty sleek looking and look awesome. Thanks in advance :)
