    Hi guys,

I currently own an alienware area 51 m5550, the laptop is 14 months old (so the warrenty is now out-of-date). I tried to charge it the other day and the laptop started smoking at where the power supply plugs into the laptop. I went to a local computer shop and got quoted £140 ($280) does this seem a lot? Could I fix this issue myself? Any help would be great! :) Also its not the charger with the problem as I have tested the laptop with another charger.

There's no question that you could fix it yourself. However if you're asking that question right away you may be better off going with the repair bill. At least that way you know (or rather can hope) it's being done right.

$280 does not surprise me when smoke is involved. Chances are a good part of the power circuitry was fried.

OK thanks for the help, even thought it is out of warrenty, do you think alienware would be likely to help as for a 14month expensive laptop going up in smoke does not seem right to me.

the m5550 was known for its overheating issues. try giving roswell a call and see if they can do anything for you. you might get lucky and they might service it for you.

I personally, with the experience I've had with AW and stuff I read on the forums, could say 100% that they won't fix it for free. And to be honest, it's a shame that you didn't get a longer warranty - most problems with electronics appear after 1 year.
