    Hi guys.

I'm ready to buy myself a new laptop - it would be a basic setup for $1100

    I want to get
    512MB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD 3870
    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T8100 2.1GHz (3MB Cache 800MHz FSB)
15.4" WideUXGA 1920 x 1200 LCD (1200p) (I don't like skull design but thats the only one what comes with this resolution)
Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium (64-bit Edition) with Service Pack 1 plus Free Windows 7 Upgrade Option
    2GB Dual Channel DDR2 SO-DIMM at 667MHz – 2 x 1024MB
160GB 7,200RPM (8MB Cache) w/ Free Fall Protection (I want to have fastest hd for cheap I don't need storage on this laptop
AlienFX® Illuminated Keyboard – Exclusive Design

Is it a good time/money time to buy?

All I want it for - programing / school (so it should be stable), AGE OF CONAN (must play well 30+ fps) , web, FOLDING@HOME

Thank you for all the input. I understand If I would spend 1700 it would be awesome machine but I just don't have the money.

I'm migrating from HP dv5t which was kind of big dissapointment.

some advice I want to buy m15x --> Don't. lol

I would hang on for a bit and wait and see what AW has coming very soon.

That, and the M15x is notoriously bad with hinge breaks and other issues...

I'd recommend an entirely different system if you don't have the money.

The M15x is a great laptop. Not only are you getting one year old technology, but you also get state of the art fail-proof display hinges that slowly crack to let you know when you're putting too much pressure on it instead of breaking off entirely. The M15x also uses a unique form of cooling that uses the latest downclocking technology to slow your games to a crawl when the components get too hot. This ensures that the laptop has a few seconds to cool down before cooking itself to a crisp once again. Did I mention that it makes a perfect heating solution for your lap? You can now burn calories and shrink your manhood at the same time while fragging noobs on your thighs. You can't go wrong with an amazing laptop like the M15x. Buy now!

This made me laugh out loud so hard I nearly fell off my chair!

Sadly a lot of the points Soviet makes are true. It uses tech from over a year ago, at a very marked up price, hinges will break over the process of about 8-14 months, and the cooling honestly isn't entirely sufficient for the power inside it.

Wait for the new M15x. It's coming out VERY soon.

Correct. Give it a month or two. Then buy the new and greatly improved Alienware M15x.

    Thanks Soviet Sunrise :)
it was very good, the best review ever :D

What about m17, in basic config it seems like a very good value for the money (assuming it's has high end parts) 1100-1300

HP dv5t and Toshiba I had runs EXTREMELY hot and don't look that nice :)

M17 all the way. Gorgeous machines and what a price at the minute. I paid £2500 for mine with an average config. If I was buying now I would definitely get one of those.
As long as you dont plan on sticking a quad-core in it then they are also very reliable machines.

Although I am curious about these new Alienware machines, bearing in mind you guys in the US get all these stupendous discounts and low prices Im sure you could stretch to the new M15X once it arrives.

What makes anyone think that the new M15x will be even remotely close to the $1,100 this guy wants to spend on a laptop? I would guess it will be in the $1,599-$1,699 range for the basic model.

I have owned my m15x for 13 months now and it has performed amazingly. No hinge problems, plays WoW very well (40-50 fps) and doesn't heat up (though I do use a cooling pad too). Oh and I love the use of the smart bay :D

I think that the m15x is a very good purchase at $1,100.

I just bought a new m15x 2 weeks ago (against all recommendations from this great community) and couldn't be happier. I use my home-built desktop with 30" Dell screen for gaming so I don't game on my laptop, just casual browsing, online chess and some flash games. My setup was close to your proposal except I went with 4gb ram, 14x9 screen (19x12 is too small for my eyes on a 15" screen) and 250gb HD. I also upgraded to a 2yr warranty to help out in a probable hinge-cracking replacement. Like I said, I couldn't be happier. The laptop is solid all around (the hinges do creak a little, but I purposely open and close the lappy slowly) and meets my needs perfectly and was available when I needed to purchase it.

I have to say even now the m15x would be a very nice laptop, provided the case didn't use horrible plastic, it had decent cooling, wasn't overpriced for last gen tech, or had terrible hinges.

I do wish they brought the smart bay feature over to newer laptops though.

I would highly recommend buying a
m17 or M17x, I've heard a lot of negative about the m15x all around. :D

I don't see how the new M15x will be much better then anything else available (i.e. M17 and M17x, I prefer the latter).
