im curious as to everyones boot times with thier alienwares. post your boot time here and you system model and hardware. listing startup programs and anti-virus programs would be useful too.

    i have an m17x
    2-GTX 260M
    core 2 duo T9600 processor @ 3.2 ghz
    4 gig ram
    windows 7 64-bit

    startup programs and anti-virus
    bitdefender 2010
    rmclock
    rivatuner
    steam

my boot time is about 2 mins and 30 seconds. this seems kinda lenghty to me. is that normal? my brother and friend get about 1 min on there systems. wat are other people getting?

It's not normal, to be more accurate check this thread, it has a program that measures the boot time
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/microsoft-windows-7/459125-post-your-windows-7-boot-time.html

your time is high, but you don't state if you have a SSD, HDD, RAID...
Advice, disable the programs that you don't need to boot every time and the services that you don't use.
My times are at the last posts of that thread.
If you have a SSD there is a thread on how to tweak it and optimize its performance, some of them apply for HDDs too.

im not sure what this means but i checked my system info and it just tells me i have an ATA device. im guessing i have raid.

edit: also could bitdefender be whats causing the slow startup? the biggest issue i have when booting up windows is when it shows the windows logo it hangs for about 30 seconds then it says welcome and hangs for about 20 seconds then the screen flashes and it shows the welcome screen again then hangs for about 20-30 more seconds then finally it shows my desktop and it takes once again about 20-30 seconds for everything to stabalize and windows explorer to fully run and work

    I see...
Reboot your computer and enter the BIOS.
Go to Advance Menu and look what it says next to the SATA operation, if it says RAID then you have RAID, if it says AHCI then you don't have RAID.

Yes bitdefender could slow you down disable it from the startup items and see if it makes a big difference, if yes then use another program like MSE that it's lighter and allows you to boot faster, if not, reenable it and try a different start up item. Remember one at time until you find it.

he mightve used winbootinfo. it provides info like that.
and it wasnt bitdefender. i was kinda hoping it was. i got my startup down to 75 seconds. but its still to slow for me.
i defraged my boot folder, enabled no gui boot, diabled some useless bitdefender processes and other startup programs like java update. and i enabled 2 processors during start up instead of just one.

any ideas on how i can shave 30 more seconds off? i used winbootinfo and found that the startup item taking the most time is crashdump.sys and other related items. do these things start up on everyone elses pc's? i think it might be cuz i was undervolting my cpu and blue screened it a lot until i found the perfect voltages. any ideas on how to fix this?

edit: heres my winbootinfo pic. looks my boot time increased this time = [

edit edit: i have an AHCI drive. is that good?

I agree with anand00x, get an SSD, the best investment for your laptop right now.
    Thanks for the info btw...
