Hi.
Ive just noticed that my alienware mx17 makes weird buzzing noises around the gpu's randomly? also when playing games, is it normal for one 260M to reach 80C while the other stays around 40-50ish?
thanks for the help.

If one card is getting hotter then the other your probably just playing a game that doesn't support two cards so one is not being use. Don't know anything about the buzz but some electronics when plugged in will buzz if the ground is messed up, check your ac adapter.

nvidia cards typically have a noticeable buzz from the coils "squealing"
My suggestion, turn up the sound and try to ignore it -
Yah talon, mine does the same thing, but only when playing certain games on certain screens. For instance the character creation screen in Oblivion does it every time, but once the game actually starts it goes away again. It isn't loud or anything, but it is there though it doesn't affect anything. Also in games that don't support SLI fully, one card does the majority of the work, so one always gets hotter, at least in my experience. And I have tested the crap out of this poor thing.

A more drastic measure I've seen from searching on the net is using hot glue. -
Hot glue on the coils to deaden the vibration? Or hot glue to sniff so you don't notice the noise at all?

either one should work.

I posted about this buzzing problem in another thread. I got my m17x through microcenter and I was hoping to return it for another unit thinking that I had a defective machine. I guess I'll have to decide if the buzzing bothers me enough. True once the fans kick on I don't hear it, but I know it's there. Another problem is that the m17x isn't even offered anymore by microcenter. I'm heading up there tonight to see what the deal is. They told me a few weeks ago to hold on to my system until another one comes in so...

Go into a real quite room and put your ear up to your LCD. I bet you hear that also.

Heh, maybe. But the buzzing from the card is actually quite noticeable, well to me at least. I'm curious if this happens on all systems, because I asked two of my buddies to see if they hear anything. One said he didn't, the other said he heard something and that it sounded like a fan. I also checked both cards and they both make the same noise. I'm pretty sure it's not the fans either. In any case, I'll finally have a chance to go back to microcenter tonight. Who knows, maybe I'll get the hookup and get an ATI crossfire replacement

hehe I can hear the LCD hum much louder than any buzzing from my GPUs....

you will not get any ATI replacement. If you bought at microcenter they will either replace it or allow you to exchange it towards another laptop (but will NOT refund it)

That's what I originally thought (about a refund). When I called in (couple weeks ago) they said I would get a full refund since you have seven days to return it, and I would not have to pay a restocking fee because it was damaged. The customer service was a bit shoddy when I actually went in there after I called in. They simply wrote on my reciept that the 7 day warranty was extended (since there weren't any more in stock), but not how much it was extended by, lol. That would kinda suck if I do decide to return it and I only get store credit. Having $2500 store credit doesn't sit well with me. I'll know definitively tonight.

They have good stock in desktop parts at least if all else fails lol. That could build a WICKED desktop
weird buzzing noise?
