Samsung 830 series SSD's. The mSata SSD's are Liteon or Crucial, I believe.

My mSATA is a Samsung 830, and recent SSDs have been Samsung 840 Pro- atleast the two that a colleague got have been.

I ordered mine in April, came with Samsung 830's.

If you order the M14x R2 with RAID SSD's, it will come with a 256GB Samsung 830 SSD and a 256GB Liteon mSata SSD or Crucial mSata SSD, configured together in RAID resulting in SATA II performance limited to 300MBps. However, if you order the M17x or M18x with RAID, they come with regular Samsung 830 series SSD's.

Both are excellent choices over a traditional HDD, but mSata SSD RAID is slower than a single SSD because the mSata is limited to SATA II. Don't worry though, you won't notice it.

Short of looking at the information label, you can tell what model it is from the SSD properties data in Device Manager. If not by name, by hardware ID.

Ive been wondering the same. Philips and such.. are buying out the cheap stock piles of 22nm ic that's been resulting in poorer then expected performance and sorting out the best to make their drives... however... its cheap stuff...

Samsung 800 series has proven reliable... especially the 810/840's which dell use...

hard to say which you'll get, I imagine each warehouse will use different bins depending on their stock/bids at wholesale auctions for this stuff...

have to ask yourself, is alienware starting to cut corners in their products to save money ? If theres one place you'd likely see it first, it would be in HHD's and SSD's.

I also suspect, two people won't always get the same drives either..

but Liteon's SSD's seem to perform to what last years medium grade SSDs were... from the few people who've shown some test results. I do not personally have any experience with one that is recent atm.

But I would place my money on Samsung first. Samsung does NOT make cheap stuff. they actually make the IC itself too... they could very well reserve the best in the world for themselves.

My 17 came with a 256GB LiteOn, while my 18 came with a 64GB Samsung PM830. Neither are particularly high end. Replaced the one in my 18 with a 512GB PM841 and RAID 0'd two 512GB 840 Pros with that.

The samsung will give better performance and longevity most likely since they are a top down manufacturer.

Unfortunately you do not have a choice of brands. I wish Alienware did allow us to choose what SSD(s) we want.

I was once told that my system would come with Samsung 830 but it came with LiteOn. Because of this, I called and asked if a replacement was possible, but they told me the brand you get is random - basically whatever brand is readily available is installed.

At least the technicians are smart enough to not mix brands, if you order RAID.

Yeah, I think also, if you want to use a Samsung 840 PRO...Dell doesn't seem to come with the "Pro" version even though they sell it. I may use my egift card on that since they don't carry the Everki Titan.
