So I was going to get the OCZ DIY 17 inch notebook. 2.8 gigahertz dual core, 4 gigs of ram, 500 gig harddrive, and two Crossfired 3870's. But now that it seems OCZ is no longer importing these what should I do? The total to my home built was about 1800 bucks, an a comparable alienware was something like 2300. Should I wait for someone else to pick up the model? Wait till new egg gets some more in (if they ever do) use my student discount to get a base M17x (which would be less of a computer)? Or an m17? Or something elese?

The reason I love the ocz whitebook diy/m17/flextronics whatchamacallit, is that it's upgradable, and I really like the backlit keyboard.

I was thinking about trying to find the previous Alienware M17x model (y'know the one that doesn't have the fake vents in the front), but how upgradable is that thing?

or should I get something completely different?

    I need help.

You should read more of the threads here on upgrading. It's a mixed bag which often ends up in disappointment, at least where GPU's are concerned.

My suggestion is to save a little more money and get the M17X. It has the latest graphics cards so you won't be feeling as much pressure to upgrade.

If you buy it with one or two 260's then the upgrade path is clear to the 280's.

I guess I'll have to look into that. I'm a bit on the edge about the looks of the new m17x, one minute I like it the next I dont. We'll have to see, thanks btw!

The Whitebook has already been picked up by ASI Mobile but as Rob mentioned don't buy it thinking you'll upgrade the video cards.

Your other option is to buy it used since there's a bunch looking to sell theirs.

It's looking more and more like I'll be getting the m17x in all honesty.

You should DEFINITELY get the m17x. Even if you have to get the base model. You can easily upgrade it part by part month by month as you get extra money. By the end of a few months you can have a beast of a computer. The base m17x has such a beautiful upgrade path. Every aspect of it is like a work of art. You can easily upgrade to t9900, x9100, or qx9300 whatever is your poison. Take the base hard drive and got either 500GB x 2 7200 rpm HDD or an ocz vertex SSD or 2. Take your single gtx 260m base and up it to dual 260's or single 280 or dual 280, the choice is all yours. Since its mxm 3.0b it will most likely be able to upgrade to the next gen of video cards when they are released.

well if it'll be able to upgrade it when the next gen cards come out too, this seems like a no brainer. I still do wish they had kept the original m17x chassis though. But I'm definitely digging the new one the more I look at it.

Looks like I'll be looking into the m17x, but I'd still love more suggestions if anyone has them!
