    nVidia gtx 280m

    ATI HD 5870

the system to install them on would be an m15x... please discuss: which is better? is the difference noticeable in games or not so much?

The ATI HD 5870. Its got newer tech, smaller fab processes, runs a faster core, and is DirectX 11 ready...

The 5870. It is significantly faster; you're talking about 25% here. Plus, it supports EyeFinity and DirectX11.

It is always safe to assume that an ATI card runs cooler than its Nvidia counterpart.

I would hazard ( ;)) a guess that the ATI card is cooler. Probably cheaper too.

The 5870 doesn't seem to support 120Hz external monitors. I tried getting mine to work but failed. The 280M is supposed to support it according to nvidia but I haven't tried yet. That would be one reason to go for the 280.

I like nVidia, but I'd probably plumb for the 5870 with it's better feature support.
nVida HDMI may support a higher screen resolution but.

    This

For the win! I had the M280SLi setup in my r1 M17x and picked up the 4870 CrossFireX setup and DR650SE is spot on they are superior to the 280's.

I'm just shocked that someone asked whether a 5870 was better than a 280m.

    5870 Period.
