somebody had a thread about modding the xbox 360 wireless receiver into a 17 inch alienware. i was wondering whether something similar could be achieved with the m11x, for people who didn't/couldn't opt for the wwan card.

ideally, though, it'd be nice if the xbox 360 wireless controller could be modded to work with a different 2.4GHz receiver, like the micro usb receiver that comes with some logitech mice. i find that the existence of a thick cable regardless of whether you're wired or wireless to be kind of irritating, especially if i'm just playing on my lap :)

just exploring as many opportunities as possible - as it was a question, i didn't post it in one of the official m11x threads.

PS: i noticed the m11x shares the keyboard of the dell mini 11z.

Hey Wiggy, the thread you might want to check out is here...it's for the M17x, but you can probably ask the question regarding the m11x there as well:

    hey, welcome to the forums.

Unfortunately the wireless protocol for the micro$oft controllers is proprietary and you will most likely be unable to mod an existing mouse receiver to work with the xbox controller.

If you want to build it into the M11x, then this will be most likely possible as long as you can find the proper space for it inside. You will be able to use the usb pins from the wwan card to connect to either the receiver direclty, or to a tiny hub for more internal mods.

Since I havent seen much M11x mods out there, maybe you could be one of the first to disassemble your M11x and look for a proper place to put the receiver?

thanks. i haven't actually looked inside yet - but if the mod can be easily removed, then i may give it a go :D

will give me something to do, at the very least.

I have also been pretty annoyed with the gigantic official Microsoft adapter. I don't really understand why they designed it that way. I definitely don't think they had laptops in mind.

I have been wondering if I could just get the adapter modded. I would be happy with it, if it didn't have the cord.

Any ideas on where I could get this done? I basically want the cord chopped off, so that it's just a dongle.

well, just took a look inside the xbox 360 receiver - it should be able to sit in the wwan port, if the very top edge of the pcb is shaved off.

the usb cable itself is actually detachable from the pcb, rather than direct soldered on (i'll see if i can post scans of the receiver), so i suppose you could look for a shorter cable and just plug it in.

    WARNING - PRETTY BIG IMAGE

the red line on the pcb just shows where needs to be shaved to make the receiver sit just inside the wwan space.

now i'll just figure out how to connect it non destructively to the mini pcie connector :)

EDIT: this is the first time i've worked with mini pci express - is it true a usb plug can go straight into the socket?

if you digg in the M17x xbox receiver thread a bit, youll find a lot of info. Also, you can remove the usb socket from the pcb (as it takes up some vertical space) and solder the wires directly to the pcb. I also made a picture of the tortured receiver (with sawed off parts).

Finally, I would advice you to get some cheap wwan card (maybe even a broken one, or just get a connector if you can) and use that as a connector, so that you dont have to solder anything to the original parts.

    Wiggy Fuzz,

Any luck with installing the receiver in your M11x?

i'm posting any progress i make into scook9's thread about the receiver in the m17x.

    said thread as described

i've got a mini pcie usb adapter on order, just need to dremel both (when it comes) and hopefully it can just drop straight in. but the receiver will need to be shaved down substantially. the room to work in is tiny.
