Sometime in the next 8 months Nvidia will be launching mcp99 to be used with core i7 architecture. With the expectation that AW will refresh to remain competitive is 8 months too long to wait or good reason to buy now knowing you are good for 8 months?

New technology will always be introduced. In 8 months something else will be announced to come out 8 months down the road. It usually depends if you need the system now or not.

8 months is to long because in a year the mobile i7's will be out gt 300 and so much more i mean its like a eternity...

the new tech that came out in the last year wasn't much

but the tech that will be coming out in the next coming year will be a huge jump

I think the next big thing for gaming notebooks between now and mcp99 will be the new line of Ati cards,

Pointless as the mobile i7 processors will only last for a year before mobile Sandy Bridge, and the processors appear rubbish anyway with a high TDP and the fastest being a measly 2.0GHz with 4 cores. My bloody Q9000 pulls that off with a lower TDP.

8months is too long, the GTX 300s will be out as well as the 32nm die shrink of the current nehalem (westmere)

the fact of the matter is, as many have already said, there will ALWAYS be something better in 8-12months. If you wait for 8 months you will find yourself asking the same question.

I'd take this question more seriously if it was about speculation on whether the MCP89/99 will be the chipset/IGP for AW's sub-12" netbook/UMPC.

But trying to decide whether or not to wait 8 months for a chipset/IGP upgrade on a gaming DTR is..... :nah:

"The MCP89 will be designed for Intel's Core 2 mobile processors, with a DirectX 10-supporting graphics core. The MCP89 will offer support for notebook CPUs with system bus of 1333MHz and DDR3-1333 memory."

Does that sound like a sub-12" netbook?

Well, the real question is the following: Do you need a gaming laptop in the next 8 months or do you have one you are satisfied with?

If I were in the maket for a new gaming rig right now, would wait a few weeks to see the new ati offering. Time frame is relevant, but 8 months is excessive. Doesn't look like the premium for the current stuff ie: qx9300, x9100, gtx sli, etc. will be coming down any time soon. When it does there will still be a market for it--look at the m17, it's still a great machine and a bargain with the 4850's, x9100, buy your own ram and hdd.

Like you said, 8 months is a long time, so I guess it would depend how satisfied you are with your current system. That's the problem with technology, always changing. I really would have prefered to get a BD burner, but it was not available at the time, but if I only waited, I could have gotten that option....

Actually yes it does...especially when combined with one of the many C2S and C2D CULVs Intel is releasing. Even the MCP99 combined with the low power 32-nm Arrandales that are due out in January are ideal for sub-12" notebooks.

Why? Because it's in those types of machines that the performance of the 200M IGP that the chipset is packing would be something to get impressed over. In a gaming desktop replacement with discrete GPUs, especially one sporting SLI/Crossfire options, a good IGP is a nice feature but it's not anything worth waiting 8 months for over the MCP79.

The MCP85/89/99 is the next-gen ION platform. You'll see them in Macbooks....that is if Apple doesn't come out with their own IGP.
