just logged into my hive today but in doing so i noticed m17 gone and the site has turned into dell europe.
i didnt think my m17 was now so...............last year !!!!!
-
yeah bad news.......Im plotting my next move now. Although financial constraints and a new house means it might be next year until I can get my M17X.
so gutted. -
Yeah sad to see it go as well and no chance of upgrading to new cards before they pulled the plug.
-
Alien_M4v3r1kk Notebook Evangelist
You can still upgrade through aftermarket. No need to buy from Alienware.
-
Um no one sells the cards besides Alienware. Clearly you new around here and must not know much about how the notebook world handles things so ill cut you some slack
.
-
Alien_M4v3r1kk Notebook Evangelist
Ebay is a good example.
-
amazon, newegg and your gg don't sell the 4850 cards, so yea...
-
you cant get the mobile 4850s with the MXM 2.1 slot for sale to the general public.
-
Rofl they dont exist on ebay , so no that is not a good example. Its sometimes best not to comment on things you dont know about . Just some friendly advice.

-
he made an ignorant mistake.
no big deal... -
Wow you just dont get the concept of ONLY ALIENWARE SOLD THE CARDS ? they wont be available next week or next year. Alienware had the cards made for the M17 specifically and they controlled everything so they will never be available to the public in any way shape or form .
-
.
-
yeah very touchy.......just browse the archives!
-
haha i agree, if i had the 4850s
i might had never sold mine. -
pmsl ......ebay if only
shocking how it looks like they only put 4850s in the m17 to get rid
p.s any ideas why my p8400 can only overclock on fsb to 2.4gig... 2.5 blue screens me ( id of thought i would have got better result than that.) -
Eff alienware, im going sager from now on.
-
-
-
Have to agree with Poliuy. After 5 Alienware laptops going to try something else the next time i look for a leading edge lappy.
-
but thats argueably good business.
at least they were offered in some or another... -
What about the sites out there that sell MXM cards ( www.mxm-upgrade.com)
No they dont have 4850s but Ive seen a few decent cards on there from time to time. Also If alienware does support its laptops wouldn't they have to have some stock of cards they have put in laptops? What if you just got an M17 and the gpu breaks before the warranty is up? Would they just give you a whole new M17x or send you a new GPU. If they have them but just wont sell them thats plain rotten. -
it happened to some one the forum and it did not ended well if i recal right
-
Well how did you get your 4850s? Did you just order an M17 recently? Also does anyone know how much they were charging for them when they were "for sale" I think all of this is probably due to the m17 having mxm 2.1 and no manufacturers making those cards anymore
-
thanks Uroboros for that MXM upgrade link....its a great site with some good info.
Do you think some 4850s could appear on there someday?
Im gunna always check Ebay on the off-chance that some former M17 or MSI owner decides to sell theirs as spare parts.....very doubtful but stranger things have happened. -

Yep still in warranty and trying to get it fixed is being an arse so far. 6 weeks almost since original fault (Friday 17th July IIRC!)
New machine or replacement cards, I dont really care, I just want a working machine!
@ Uroboros, the card upgrade was £300 on a new machine IIRC. -
@Uroboros
ya i just bought aout a month a month ago
@Alexrose1uk
ya i was refering to ya i hoppe you ge issues resoled asap it lasted long enof to me ifmine haves any issue and it's not resoled after 6 weeks i'll get nasty with them ..... -
i have a call into my ocz rep and also the guy at flex i know.. no promises but ill ask and badger the daylights out of them to see if they can get some
-
What about asimobile and the 4850's?

Can you check your voltage, bump it up to at least 1.113V.
Also can you check if your ram is stable?
Maybe you need to increase the timmings. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Unfortunately we dont have that level of control on the components on the M17, however I agree, the likelyhood is Kcuk is either voltage limited (perhaps a good thing on a notebook), or when he pushes the FSB that far; his RAM is flaking out with the set timings, quite a reasonable possibility as the M17 tends to set reasonably tight timings as per the SPDs, so it'll all depend on the RAM how flexibly you can FSB clock
-
Another reason for dropping the M17 from the product line is to not have to provide support for Windows 7 Users. As it is a Pre-Windows 7 Release machine, and they stopped selling them directly (yeah you can get a factory refurbished one) before Windows 7 Officially releases they don't have to go back and update the drivers and software for Windows 7, essentially washing their hands of a potential future customer issue. Which...stinks.
-
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
By marketing that as a feature in the later models; they've pretty much guaranteed they have to at least partially support it. -
When I bought my wife's M17 with the 4850's for me, it came with a free upgrade to Win7
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
So did mine...expected some time around October 20th
-
So whats the fricken deal with your laptop Alex? Any news?
-
What? M17 gone from the website and no one starting unfounded rumors about an M17 i7 refresh.
Don't start them I'm just making a bad joke. ;þ
The 4850 option on new sales was likely just to clear stock on M17s. -
OMG! M17 with i7! Thanks for the heads up Phin!
-
i7, USB 3.0 and Mobile 5870s FTW!

Also cpu pin mod can increase volatge.
Now as for ram timmings and such, SPDtool and thaiphoon burner can change every part of your ram.
You can flash new timmings, frequency and even voltage to your ram. -

@ Moral Hazard
Im a fairly firm believer in tampering as little with bits like that from within windows as possible, prefering to use BIOS settings. I know RMclock allows downclocking, but Im not sure I'd entirely trust too much to any software solution; I've seen far too many people with instability problems because of them. That said, its been a while since I last looked into them fully; so if they work a lot better nowadays I apologise.
Same goes to CPU Pin modding, good in theory, but I've seen several people with dead CPUs from them in reality; I'd prefer to avoid. Killing a laptop this expensive isn't worth it.
Actually that'd be beasty...if the next run of mobility chips keep the standard of minus 20-25% speed in comparison to the desktop version.
I think most M17 owners would kill if AW made an MXM2.1 58 series upgrade kit available! -
moral hazard Notebook Nobel Laureate
It may kill your ram, but ram is cheap.
Also there is a way to hot flash ram back to life by tapeing all of the pins except for the SPD pins and booting with a good stick then hot plugging the bad stick and flashing good timmings back to it.
Flashing ram is something that really improves the amount you can overclock.
If you ever have unstable ram, consider it
Otherwise, I agree with not messing with stuff. -
Anyone know if i still can buy the M17 alienware? i am taking on vacation in october and am going to Miami, and were thinking about going to their "Headquarter" and buy a M17. Is that possible?
Please reply.. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Apparently still available in the US under recertified, but that's it.
-
So i can still come to their shop in Miami, and buy a M17? can i still costumize it in their shop?
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Probably not
-
Why not? dont they have it at ALL anymore?
-
Did Alienware EVER let you buy a system in a shop customise it and take it away the same day anyway?
I certainly dont think they did. -
Maybe not take it with me the same day, but arent there anywhere i can buy the M17 now?
wow m17 gone! and a so has the site
