m17x is completely different from the m17. do not attempt to flash the BIOS from one on the other. as for overclocking, no dice so far. you'll need to find the PLL number, which is on a chip on the motherboard.

Alienware does not include the ability to overclock the Extreme series CPUs as noted. You could try some software overclocking with RMClock. Do you already have the m17x with the X9000?

no Chaz, I'm on the forum to choose between new m17 and m17x.
now with the help of all you(mr Wizzho in particular ;), I tend on
m17x(reliability vs power   ).
I would like to make order next week, and in 4-5 max days I has to
decide. example: extreme x9000 only if OC is possible.
    and as ever THANKYA!

I dunno man...I wouldn't say the m17 has reliability issues...

what I would say is it is WAY better value than the m17x...the support for quad core, support for upgraded graphics, ddr3 1066 Ram...the m17x is a dated machine now in that sense...plus, if your adventurous you can flash you bios with the OCZ bios which allows you to overclock you extreme processor, I don't believe you can do that with the m17x

I'm sure it's a nice rig and all, but I think choosing it over the m17 might be a regrettable choice down the road...

either way you go you'll end up with a sick laptop though, so it's all good!

The M17 is definitely a better value than the M17X from a price/performance standpoint.

Here's my take on both machines.
    M17X:

    OCZ Whitebook/M17:

For me, it would be a tough choice between the two assuming price wasn't an object. The M17X is definitely the more unique of the two - it is a proprietary Alienware design unlike the Whitebook.

If you go for the M17X, don't bother with the X9000 since you can't OC.

    great reviews.
"For me, it would be a tough choice between the two assuming price wasn't an object." this is the poin! only I don't want waste money .
I don't understand if x9000 is the best choise.
also I'd like to know what model of SSD use alienware.
so hard make a decision for me on m17 vs m17X because my last experience with laptos (qosmio x300...)was a nightmare.

if you want an SSD, get the laptop with a 120GB hard drive, and upgrade yourself. that way, you'll be able to pick the brand of SSD you want.

160 Gb hdd 7200 / (immediatly ssd hdd 160 Gb upgrade)
    Smart Bay ok!
    additional ac adapt. (your opinion?)

get the t9500, it's all you'll need, seeing how you can't OC. 9800m-gt is given. as for the RAM, purchase 1GB from Alienware, and buy a 2x2Gb RAM set from an online vendor and install them yourself - you'll save well over 150$. if you need the additionaly AC adaptor and battery, get them, but i don't see much sense behind them, seeing how the m17x is a desktop replacement, and not intended to be moved around all the time. good choice on the operation system, definitely 64bit.

whizzo is right - upgrade the hard drive to an SSD and upgrade the RAM yourself. The X9000 isn't worth the premium because it is only 200MHz faster than the T9500.

If you are traveling between two locations with the M17X, then it is worth it to get two power adapters so you can leave one at each location.

If you do go for the second AC adapter, AW sells cheaper after you have the laptop. They gave me a second one for my m15x for ~$25 CAD which is much better than the $60 they charge to get it with the system. I believe the same goes for an extra battery.

are you sure about no possibility CPU overclocking
    (x9000extreme/m17x)? because later upgrading in
    my country are so expensive.
    tks all!

We are sure - the X9000 cannot be overclocked in the M17X.

CPU speed is not very important. There is not much difference between 2.8GHz (X9000) and 2.5GHz (T9300). I recommend the T9300 or T9500.
