Someone told me to download fan control 1.1 to cool down my MacBook Pro better. Yes, I know it was a big mistake on my part but it seemed appealing. I truly feel like an idiot for installing this.

Now I have uninstalled the program accordingly, reinstalled the operating system, resetted the SMC and now my fans do not adjust to load and temperature. They just stay at 2000 rpm no matter what I do. I want to get this back to normal but the program probably messed with the firmware so I might have to take it in for repair.

If anyone knows anything about this let me know - your help is appreciated.

P.S: If I do have to bring it in...Genius Bar or ship it?

Did you try SMC 2.0? I use 1.3 (I think) and have had no problems yet. But why is 2000 rpm a problem? Thats standard for the C2D mbp. Or is it staying on all the time?

fan speed doesnt increase when there is load on the cpu. It also doesn't change when I'm doing something intensive like a game. Fan control 1.1 must have messed up the firmware...Im going to send it in.

Firmware is not something to mess with generally. It can really screw things up if there is a problem in the install as you found. I would try Apple. I prefer talking to them in person. Whatever you do, don't tell them what you did. I am sure that program voids the warranty.

Yeah, I don't intend to tell them. I never anticipated that this program would mess with the firmware... Well I've learned my lesson.

Hrm, I checked into SMCFanControl. It states it does not modifications to the firmware. The docs say that upon a full shutdown and retboot, the fans will be back to normal. You would in fact have to start SMCFanControl again to have your new settings take effect.
At least, thats what the site says.

Just wanted to provide some additional information...

When running the Apple Hardware Test, no errors were found and the fans work properly, adjusting to temperature and load as found during the memory and logic board tests. However after booting into OSX after completing the test the fans do not fluctuate like they should.
