Got my MBP yesterday. It came with a 9CC2 screen, which is supposedly AUOptronics.

Contrast is very high, I reckon above 800:1. Colors and viewing angles are very good too. It has one problem: brightness.

I used it outside with sunlight but the backlight was not strong enough to overpower the reflections. My MBA was much brighter, and also the 9C89 screen on my first uMB was brighter.

When I'm working inside the house during the day I'm usually on 1 or 2 stripes from the max.

It's a not a huge problem for me because I did not really plan on keeping it for long but if I buy again I'll probably try to get another screen. Expecially the MB April 2009 screens interest me. I've never seen them in real life though.

Here are some pics of it next to an Asus 1101HA which was measured at 129 nits max by Notebookjournal.

The first three are on full brightness, than half brightness. Keep in mind that photographs can not really give an accurate impression of brightness levels.

I have the same screen and I'm pretty happy with it.. I don't plan to work outside anyway.

Do you have a good calibration profile for it, by any chance?

TBH, I can't tell. The Macbook Pro looks as bright, if not brighter than the Asus. It's hard to tell in those pics. If anything, the Macbook Pro looks a lot better in terms of screen quality.

On a side note, @Phil, are you a notebook tester or something to that effect? I notice you don't keep a computer more than a few months, then you dump it. One of my reasons for buying the Rev B Macbook Air was through your recommendations and you appeared to really like yours. Then shortly thereafter you dumped it in favor of the Sony Vaio Z.
Now you have a Macbook Pro 13" and you're already saying that you're going to dump it soon. Just curious??

I agree it's a very nice screen. And yes there is a calibration here:

I also like the standard calibration with Gamma set to TV.

Edit: someone uploaded a new profile: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=740522&page=2

I like to buy notebooks, use them for a while and sell them without loosing money. I enjoy the process. I'm always looking for good deals and usually I gain a little money in the process.

I'm not 100% sure yet if I will sell this one. MBA is nice too. MBA is waaay brighter than this screen. Look at this picture :) It's the 9CC2 on brightest position. Oh well if I keep this one I will just have to work in the shade.

Go to system prefs, display, open a calibrated profile, info nr.13 or something like that. Welcome by the way.

Thanks. Looks like I have the 9C8A, by Samsung I think. I'm particularly interested in this since I haven't been very impressed with the screen. Just got this MB a couple weeks ago.

Yes, that's correct. Well, not sure what you mean by standard, but it's the aluminum unibody (2.4ghz, 4gb ddr3) macbook.

Hmm, ya it looks like most are pleased. Maybe I have it calibrated poorly. Anyway, wasnt intending to hijack your thread... was just curious to see how I could find out which screen I had, and I appreciate all the help.

Don't worry about it. Maybe try to find a calibrated profile on macrumors, that could help.

I'm sure you guys know that 9C8A & 9CA8 are different, right?

    9C8A - Samsung (pre-April 2009)
    9CA8 - AUO (post-April 2009)

No I did not know that. Thanks for clarifying.

So 9CA8 is the good one, supposedly.
