I've been looking around for answers to these to no avail.

    1. Why in gods name does the download manager in safari stay open?

    2. Why can't iChats windows go to the same spot everytime I don't want it popping up in the middle.

    1. Probably to let you see your downloads all together. Most web browsers do this; Firefox, Mozilla, Opera. The only one I've ever used that doesn't is IE. There may be some setting that you can change in Safari though. I don't know as I don't have it.

    2. Again, most applications do this. It brings it front and center to let you know you have a message.

Firefox has a box to check that closes it after the download is complete. I think Opera might too.

Most (windows) applications "remember" were they were closed from and open there again so i don't have to keep dragging the damn things away

I don't think there is an option in Safari unless i'm an idiot :)

Why do you want the download window to close? This is a list view that shows all your downloads. The one in Firefox doesn't close either.

My personal beef with the DL window is that it stays in the background when it's already open so you have no feedback when you start a new download. I have downloaded many things multiple times because of that. It's not clear whether or not a download has already started.

    Firefox or Camino are alternatives.

I don't use iChat because it doesn't properly handle disconnect/reconnect. It just disconnects, puts up some error dialog, and then never reconnects again even if the connection recovers.

So I use Adium. It's way better as long as you don't need video chat. Check it out. IMHO this is the best IM client on any platform, and best of all it's free and open source. Not shareware, not nagware, nothing.

OS X is great. That doesn't mean that the iApps are all great. Some are, some are not. But there's very high quality freeware available for OS X..

The firefox one can be checked to close when downloads are done.

I don't need to look at a blank box telling me what i just finished downloading when it's already on the desktop.

I kinda like the video chat :)
