So after about 9 1/2 months of ownership and using it every day for hours on end, my MacBook Pro finally gave up. I've taken it into an Apple Authorized Service Provider to have the logic board replaced.
What im wondering is:
- Is the logic board new or refurbished?
- Because the 2.2 GHz is a Santa Rosa/Merom generation board, would I wind up with the same 2.2 GHz/128MB 8600M GT card configuration or would it get bumped to 2.4 GHz with a 256MB 8600M GT?
- If they change the board out and it has an upgraded spec how does that affect the serial number information?
Thanks!

I cant speak for the place whos going to be doing the repair, but from with my experience of having mine replaced from apple I can give some feedback.
The board should be new, it shouldnt be refurbished.
Technically, it should be possible to swap out the 2.2 with a 2.4 board and get an upgrade. I went over this as a posibility when mine did. Back then not many seemed to know anything about it, but from my own research it seems that it should work out okay. The only thing, is that if apple were to do it, theyd void the warrenty. And youd have to buy the 2.4 board with your own money. They wont upgrade it, or allow you to pay the difference. Private places on the otherhand may, I havnt dealt with them. Someone also said in a 1 post situation, that their 2.2 had been upgraded to a 2.4, but never responded to any other info, so I dunno about that.
Maybe if you know a tech or sometihng, you could get it pulled off from apple, third party it might be easier.
The serial number information is basically one of the excuses apple told me. Since the SN is for a 2.2, if something happens to it, it doesnt match up.
Basically if its out of warrenty (which it doesnt seem like it is), if you are willing to let it go out of warrenty for an upgrade, and if you're willing to buy a 2.4 board, then it should be possible.
But yea, I wondered myself, later if you could upgrade the logic board with even the more recent MBP's, or later generations. Since youre replacing the whole logic board, I'd think you might be able to, although the spacing and screw placement/fastening may not be compatible. Never really looked into it, and I got apple care, so I probably wont look into it for a while.
But yea, since youre dealing not directly with apple, they may be willing to make a deal with you for a little extra cash. Although I dont know if theyd still accept the warrenty, maybe it would only be an inhouse thing.
But according to apple, its a nono. technically, it is possible though.
Hopefully I helped a bit, no one seems to bring this topic up, and since I couldnt find much info from other people, hopefully I can help you from what I've learnt.
Let us know what happens though! -
Right, but what happens if they are unable to order the 2.2 GHz logic board? I can't imagine the warranty being void if they have to bump to 2.4 GHz.
(Sorry if this posts more than once, something weird seems to be happening with my connection here tonight) -
Well, I'd assume they'd be able to get them, because I think apple probably has stock for the old powerbooks as well : s
But yea, sure if there are NONE then I guess they could use a 2.4, but i doubt that they wont have any left.
