interesting. well, if it's been like that for years and there aren't widespread reports of CPU failures, it's a non-issue.
how hot does it get in the lap?
-
Not quite
-
yes, it is.

HD Mobility 5850 GDDR5 (not GDDR3 as in Acer): 11500-12000 (with i5) stock speeds. <-- benchmarked myself.
HD Mobility 5870: 13000 - 14000 range
GTX 285M: 12000 (approximate)
all benchmarks run at 1280x1024. Single cards. -
I dont think SLI territory means "only SLI cards can get that fast" ... it means more... "most things in that area are SLI"
-
Oh, I see.
-
that would be what I meant, doh123. sorry if that wasn't more clear, min2209.
-
only a little faster than what I have, I'll pass on this rev.
-
No different than my Unibody Macbook (see sig). Its not uncomfortable. That being said, I don't run heavy loads with it on my lap. For encoding, gaming, etc., I use it on a desk or table.
But for casual work, web browsing, watching videos, etc, the lap is quite fine. -
sweet. thanks for the confrimation.

Quick question: The USB ports have been noted to be close together. Does this cause problems when using an external flash drive and another USB peripheral at the same time?
-
yes it does depending on your dongle. On my old MBP (same case as this model) when i had my USB stick i barely could fit a usb cable for my iPhone.
Apple use to be great at design and thinking about details so i was/am amazed how they approved this and still did not change it for this update. -
depends on the size of the USB plug.
My USB drives and cables have no problems fitting in with each-other... but I've seen some on the market that are rather fat... I just don't buy those. -
Do you guys think you could snap some shots of the peripherals connected??

Anyone hooked up their i5 to an external monitor?
I got mine connect to an LCD using a mini-display port to hdmi cable. When i use it like this it gets to 70C when i'm just surfing the net and playing itunes. It gets really hot on the top left side of the keyboard.
Anyone else experiencing this? -
more than likely.. using an external screen is forcing the 330m on all the time, which increases heat.... surfing the net can cause a lot of CPU usage depending on the pages, especially if flash is used... which can increase heat as well. Its normal to be more on the left, since the CPU and GPU are over there and creating almost all the heat.
-
gpu stays around 50C, cpu about 70C and 5% load :S
-
I was connected to a very high-end video switcher all last week. Of course, that was ALSO the time I was reporting temps in the 60C range.
I didn't have iStat set properly during the week, but using it, you can tell when the 330m is on. Set it to display the wattage for GPU 1. When its off its less than a watt. When on, it goes to 1.5W or higher.
BTW. They just released a new iStat Menu. Works perfectly, though they are now charging for it. However, I will say its a fantastic piece of software -
I wonder why Apple didn't add the options "use Intel Graphics" "use Nvidia Graphics" "Let OSX automatically choose graphics when needed"
Maybe if Apple never adds that, some 3rd party will make a tool where you can quickly set those. -
I expect a tool to be out by some 3rd party by the middle of next month.
I'm surprised it's now already out, tbh. I understand having autoswitching on by default...but to not give the consumer an option to disable it is bullsh*t.
