    2010 macbook pro, strange noise--should I return?

I just opened my first ever macbook pro from its box. I've noticed immediately that when the unit is tilted in any direction, sideways, back, any direction, an electrical "buzzing" sound will emit from the components under the keyboard.

It sounds very much like the "zzzzzzzzzzzz" sound one hears as they drive by power lines on the side of the road....only toned down quite a bit, obviously. But it's definetly an electrical noise. It's only emitted when I move the computer, but it's already annoying...I hear it every time. And I move/adjust/reposition this laptop around allot.

So, is something amiss? Should I return this unit? What am I hearing?

If you can hear it noticeably, I would definitely return it. Why bother with a machine that already annoys you when you can just swap it?

That doesn't sound normal, mine is completely silent.

Take it to the Genius Bar and see what they have to say about it.

Yeah I don't live anywhere near a genius bar--so I have to be my own genius and make a decision.

I'll describe the sound as a lightsaber-like sound. A "swoozzsh" sound when the machine is tilted....

Tough call here....what can it be? Anyone else with a 2010 macbook pro have a similar issue? It's really subtle, but it's there. Please test it and see if you can hear it....

That's really scary. It's not "spinning" as far as I know though.... I mean, I only have a single internet browser running.....so... as far as I can tell it would only make a "noise" if it was being active, right?

If you just bought it just contact their sales line and they should send you a new one and then give you a box to return the defective one in.

I just got off the phone with Apple care. It was a fight but they are replacing this unit, they categorized it as DOA. Finally.

    Dead On Arrival, DOA.

Not sure why he had to do it like that but....whatever, I wanted to exchange the unit & not have to go through the red tape of seeing a service center and having them tear it apart yadda yadda yadda.....in the end I got that, though it took alot of pushing on my part.

The Macbook Pro operated fine otherwise...although, and take this for what you will as it's my first apple notebook but (and I didn't mention this to apple) but it seemed--and this is entirely subjective mind you--but it seemed like there was also a slight delay when opening programs and working in programs. No action or command in programs were "snappy" like I expected of a brand new 64bit operating system plus i5.

Edit: I see you have an i5, never mind then. Hope your new machine is pristine!

    No, mine was a 15" macbook pro 7200 HD, i5 2.4, 8GB.

EDIT: Thanks, me too. It's soooo disheartening having a bum unit....a unit you don't have absolute trust in. You know?
