Any word on whether it supports DDR3 1600MHz? Specs on Intel's site show that the CPU does.

If you already have 1333MHz, upgrading just to 1600MHz isn't going to make a difference.

That is nice, at least there is confirmation now. It was difficult to gauge 16GB RAM compatibility with the 2011 MBP's simply because Intel's website wasn't all that clear. Now I just need it to come down to $100 and I can jump on board as, right now, their price is more than I spent on my MBP.

Wow that's awesome! That kind of memory makes a world of difference in Aftereffects and 3D StudioMax, super jealous!

indeed. it is great news. I just wish there were more memory bays. The HP Elitebooks benefit from having 4 memory bays, so you can get to 16GB for much less money.

(though I know some of the Elitebook owners were having issues with their bays...dunno if they got those issues sorted)

I will let you know by the end of this month.

I have a 8540w coming and a 15" 2011 MBP coming (both by months end).
I have both equipped from factory with 8gb (2x4gb) ram and have a spare 8gb (2x4gb) ram waiting to pop into the 8540w.

If I could get my hands on some 2x8gb sticks I would pop them into the MBP but I dont have an extra $1600 laying around for that.

Either way, I am going to enjoy playing with both of these... errr I mean working ... yeah.. I bought these for work.... :D

good luck with it! the 8740w thread kinda scared me away from the entire line (too many people with similar issues for my taste. I don't like being a guinea pig for hardware and that thread reads like everyone there is.). I really wanted that display, so I guess I'll just spring for a DreamColor monitor instead.

Yeah, it is the display (mainly) that I am going for with the 8540w.
The MBP is coming with the high-res anti-glare so I am going to see how they stack against each other (also compared to my M17x-R2 RGB led).

I will color calibrate all 3 using my spyder3 and coloreyes display pro software.

If either system does not live up to snuff... I will return them under the 30day period.

Here is to hoping for the best.

    cheers.

I'm sure that if the screen is your deciding factor, you'll be going witht he 8540w. MBP screen is no slouch though...and I've had no problems doing profesional work on it (I calibrate with EyeOne Display2). I don't have any complaints...but it barely holds a candlestick to my old Vaio AW290J 18.4" screen. Then again, that display was legendary.

I miss it to this day, now 2 years removed from it. :(

how much ram does the Intel HD 3000 get when you put 16gb of ram in there?

Apple says it has 384 mb, which it did stock, but I found when I went to 8gb of ram, it now uses 512mb.
