So I'm looking at the new 13 inch macbook. Yes, I'm disappointed they are still using the Core 2 Duo, but understand why. That little fact aside, I'm wondering why I would fork out an extra $300 for the higher specked model. Am I missing something? I mean, does 260mhz and 70gb really equal $300. Seriously, if 2.4gz isn't fast enough, than 2.66ghz won't be either. And if 250gb is not enough space, 320gb won't be either.
At least that is my 2 cents.

Exactly, but the average consumer does not understand that 2.66GHz is not a huge bump from 2.4Ghz. They also do not understand the simplicity of upgrading a hard drive them selves. Like any company Apple is "tricking" the user a bit.
-
Yes, butthey "trick" the user out of an average to 40% more money. They are over double the mark up average of the next highest manufacturer. If I remember Dell is in 2nd place at only 17.5%

It was only a few years ago that black color + 40 gb = $200.
-
Ya, true enough.

It's pretty ridiculous. I can't imagine they're selling anywhere near as many $1500 models. I guess Apple decided to offer a 2.4GHz model with a decent margin, and then just take any sales that they can get for the $1500 model (ka-ching).
260mhz + 70gb = $300
