I am thinking about buying a new mac book (2.4ghz) and i was wondering if the 4gb of ram upgrade for 180$ is worth it. Its going to be for basic college use, nothing too special but since I am already spending over 1000 for it, i was wondering if I should go the extra and get the 4gb of RAM.. worth it? It comes with 2gb of RAM.. I am just not familiar with macs enough to know if that is enough because with a fairly decent PC laptop, it is rarely enough anymore.

NOT WORTH IT. atleast not from apple. It IS worth it if you buy it elsewhere (newegg.com) and put it in yourself. Apple overcharges for their ram.

2 GB of RAM is already quite good, unless you really demand performance. If you are going for 4 GB, purchase it from other stores, online or retail, where RAM will be much cheaper than the manufacturers charge :).

I've always done my shopping at Crucial (owned by Micron), and I'm sure you could find it for cheaper than there (like at newegg), but for the heck of it I checked, and you can get a 4GB kit (2 x 2) for $104.
So even then, it would be cheaper than buying through Apple. :)

2GB will be absolutely fine for your uses, if you want or feel like more RAM will be a benefit in the future, you can easily upgrade it yourself in the future.

for your described uses, you won't see any performance difference between 2GBs and 4GBs of RAM.

2 GB seems fine for you, but if you do want to get 4 GB, do not buy from Apple - instead, buy from Newegg or another discount online store for much less than $180.

Nor that of anyone who has ever bothered to upgrade from 2 to 4Gb, and then timed how long safari loads a page !

The above comment about 4Gb etc.. is way off base.
    a
    :)

ps stick with the 2Gb unless you have $$ to burn.
