It's a welcome addition, but it's survivable without the extra 1GB.

If you want the ram but don't want to pay 160 bucks you could always go on newegg.com and get 2 1gig sticks to replace the 2x512mb that's in there now, then sell the 2x512 later.

1 GB of RAM will run the MacBook fine. Of course, 2 GB will be better. And actually Mac OS X Tiger runs fine on 512 MB of RAM.

Get RAM off Newegg or somewhere else. Apple RAM is expensive compared to RAM from Newegg. It will not void your warranty to add RAM (or change the hard drive, for that matter).

OK, one thing: if you plan on doing one or more of the following:
    1)Running Parallels or VMWare
    2)Running Vista in Bootcamp
3)Using image editing (Photoshop), video editing(Final Cut), 3D modeling (Maya) or any other kinds of RAM-hungry software in a professional and/or intensive manner

Then *GET 2 GB*. If you decide not to, you're in for "teh slowness".

BTW, if you do bootcamp with WinXP you should be fine with just 1GB.

the ipod thing is such a hassle. you have to pay for it in the beginning, then go online, and see what you need to do to get the mail in rebate.

I have a macbook c2d 2.0 with only 1gb of ram, and everything is smooth and snappy. Applications open in less than 3 bounces, UB ones at least. The only one that seems to take a bit longer (6 or so bounces) is iPhoto but that is because I have more than 7,000 pictures in my library.

Anyway 1gb is more than enough for general computing tasks and even some light gaming. Order it with 1 gb, and if you think it's not fast enough for you then get 2x1gb ram sticks later from newegg or tigerdirect.

Oh yeah, usually, I have mail open (checking for mail every minute), safari with at least 2 or 3 tabs open, ical, address book, itunes, microsoft messenger, and sometimes word or excel. I never get any sort of lag or crappy animation when minimizing or maximizing.

Don't do it through apple. You can easily do the upgrade yourself. You can even pick up 2gb ram for around $60-$70.
