I love most apple stuff, and the air looks pretty cool. But who the hell is going to spend that much money for such littler performance. The Macbook as it is is overpriced. But this is just ridiculous.

Mr._Kubelwagen More machine now than man
The thing about the 1.8 Ghz is that it comes with a 64 GB SSD, which is dramatically faster than the 80 GB 4200 RPM HDD in the 1.6 model.
-
Also, you pay for the thinness and portability. Ultraportables (this kind of is) always carry a premium. I do think it a bit much, but not as much as you are probably making it out to be.
It has potential, but some flaws need to be addressed (such as the lack of ports). -
You do realize, that other utlraportables, such as the ones Dell and Sony offers, use ULV processors right? So they're generally much slower than this.
And yes, that is not expensive when compared to other ultra portables. I think you are trying to compare it to something like an M1313, which is a poor comparison. -
It's a fair price.
compare it to Sony's TZ series. -
It's not an ultra-portable it's a very thin sub-notebook.
-
I don't know what price you were expecting... with Macbooks you are basically paying for their thin size. BTW I just say it, and I gotta say... wow that looks very sexy.... but I'll stick with my MBP tyvm ^^
-
Yeah... but the TZ has superiour battery life. And swappable batteries.
-
It has the weight of an ultraportable.
And being a previous owner of Sony TZ90 I can tell you, 11 inch sucks imo. I am very happy that Apple opted for 13,3.
For me the only let down is the black keys and the 4200 rpm in the cheaper model. -
True battery life on TZ is amazing. But 5 hours on Airbook is fine for me.
-
....and more USB ports, firewire, optical drive or extra HDD, VGA, Ethernet, Expresscard, card reader, built-in WWAN, docking station....
I think the TZ is a better deal, and probably a better notebook. -
TZ lacks DVI. MB air has DVI.

Working with only 1 USB port is like going back to the 90s when it was rare to find a USB port on a laptop. What was Apple thinking? And yea I'm guessing this whole Macbook Air is aimed at a small market unlike the other Macbooks.
-
They were thinking "We want to build the thinnest laptop ever."
I personally don't see the problem. A usb hub costs 5$. -
It's aimed at the people who want a standard macbook... but thinner... lol. Honestly, it is kind of a gimmick, but it's cool so I'll give them that.
-
Even worse is that the RJ45 is a USB adapter and uses up the USB port!
I'm REALLY unimpressed with the MBA. Really. But 3lbs is amazing. -
Before the Mac v. PC debates get too thick here:
80 GB? Seriously? I don't even care about the 4200 RPM or PATA interface, but 80 GB? The freaking iPod holds more. -

I am totally digging this new macbook air. I wish I could get it.
-
Airbook! They should've made that the official name.
-
you people need to learn a lot more about the subnotebook market before you bash this thing.. it's a marvel... go look around and see how much 64gb ssd's cost. Also.. it's not a desktop replacement, you can use wireless peripherals, 1 usb is PLENTY for a notebook aimed at portability. Anyone know if it uses integrated graphics or dedicated?
-
it uses the x3100

preordering the sdd model today

You might want to wait 2 weeks before Jobs reduces the price by $200. Or use Amex.
-
Mind giving us your thoughts on it when you get it?

i lol'd... seriously...

I think you need to learn about the sub-notebook market. People out there who own ultraportables (myself included) do not desire thinner notebooks - I'm pretty happy with the depth of mine - but rather the footprint is what is important. I want my notebook to fit on the smallest of lecture desks, I want to be able to comfortably use my laptop while having a coffee in Costa and I want to be able to put in whichever bag I want. The MBA is far too big (footprint wise) to be an ultraportable. Its bigger than the MacBook!
-
Or until they have the ability to browse the web or install applications for an extra $20.
-
footprint is an issue.. i wish it were a 10 or 11" screen... I may hold off.
-
Yeah, I'd really hold off on SSD anyway. Not bad, but if I was buying a laptop with a non replaceable HDD (looks very hard, if not near impossible to get inside this thing) I'd not want to get an SSD. Not yet anyways, I think the tech needs to come a little further before I'd have it in such an expensive notebook (ie being 3k for a 64 gb drive).
-
I have owned several ultraportables (Dell X300, Sony TZ90, Averatec 1050) and I do desire thin, thin, and light!
-
If anything that is a reason to opt for SSD.
Why? because SSD is far more reliable than HDD. -
you are bizarre people, this is competing with models like a Sony TZ, etc. stop acting like it is something it is not.
in the world of notebook computers the tiniest most innovative models always go for a higher price, it is called research and development and it is expensive. -
I don't feel that the SSD drives have proven themselves in the least. They seem okay, but they have a ways to go.
I mean the drivers still treat them as normal hard drives! My point was that I wouldn't want to pay top dollar for a small drive that still has yet to prove itself. In a year I expect this drive to cost half of what it does now, and Apple will probably have a 128 GB version for a grand (which cost about 3k right now in the open market).
As far as normal reliability, I don't feel either has an advantage yet. -
I can see your point. As i had had a 32GB SSD in a Sony TZ half year ago, I feel the technology has already proven itself. I love the speed and the fact that it is 100% quiet and 0% vibrations.
Rotating disks in a portable computer like this seems a bit old fashioned to me. -
Hey is the 80GB PATA HDD internal? That would kinda make it worth a purchase at lowest spec...
-
Of course it's internal. It is the same 1.8" 4200RPM hard drive that most ultraportables have.
