I've been waiting for this!
-
That price point on ultraportable laptop seems too low to me...ultraportable usually means more $$$.
-Mike -
if they show t at macworl will it be release how many more weeks? i want to get it before march.

saturnotaku Notebook Nobel Laureate
If it's true that the ultra-portable notebook is going to use a flash drive for storage, it's either not going to be very large (so as to meet the $1500 price point) or will be way more than $1500. 16 GB SSD drives are $350 and go up practically exponentially from there.
-
It really depends. Usually, Apple announces products that ship right away. There have been some exceptions recently, but they mostly have their reasons (like iPhone needed FCC approval).
-
I remember when C2D came out on Macbook pros they took the orders for them at Macworld and shipped to you 2 weeks later.
-
Will this use a 12 or 13.3" screen? Wonder if it'll use regular or LV/ULV processors.
Agreed, for $1500, you won't get much flash storage on this and its lacking the optical drive too right? -
I'm still not sure they're right about the SSD thing. At that price point a hybrid drive seems much more likely to me. It's all just speculation though.
-
We need more information.
Its a bit weird that there is so little information out at the mo.
Normally any impending apple product is completely leaked way before time. -
Actually, not really...most of the time, Apple products are kept pretty secret. Recently, 9to5 Mac has hit a lot of right rumours, but usually there aren't many leaks. Like no one knew how the iPhone looked like unlike Steve unveiled it in January.

SaferSephiroth The calamity from within
Very exciting times! Im amazed at Apple's staggering pace with their NPIs.
-
Assuming the rumor is correct, I bet it's an iPhone/tabletish thingy.
Personally, I'm not interested in a flash drive in anything I plan to use in any substancial capacity. It'll undoubtedly be an interesting piece of tech if it does come out, but I needs me' storage. -
more info has been added from engadget
-
I'll eat my hat if the ultraportable is $1500.
-
Will you post pictures? -
If the ultraportable is really coming, and is as good as they say, then I will probably sell my macbook, get that ultraportable for going to school and other crap, and get a 17" mbp for home use, gaming, etc. I'd rather not get a desktop because I prefer the mobility of a laptop.
-
I'll bring salt and pepper for the occasion!
-
I'm currently looking for small, solid chocolate hats...
-
I wouldn't think that it would be a traditional ultraportable, but a gimpier thing, specs-wise, which would let you make it that small and at that price point. It'd be like an expensive upscale Asus EEE, maybe with some multitouch something or other... Anyone else see Apple making a device like that?
-
Why do people keep calling it an ultraportable? I am still not convinced that it's designed for that application. I doubt that Apple is going to put an ULV chip so that it has long battery life... this is a pro-product after all: dedicated graphics and regular Core 2 duo processors.
A thin-and-light would be a better term. -
who cares about 3G, i want at least 16-32GB in the iphone, come on now
3G is nice too. -
are there any flash drive laptops on the market right now or is this brand new technology for flash drives that large
-
Well the dell xps m1330 does offer flash based drives but its an option.
-
Yes, there are several notebooks with options to add SSDs and you can buy them separatedly as well.
-
stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
i think apple needs to make a convertable tablet. but then again, they got about 3 or 4 years until i'l be buying a new laptop to work on that.
-
Yes, I would prefer that to a standalone tablet. However, you have to remember Apple is manufacturing for the largest market possible, and not you
. If the market for these things isn't too large, most likely Apple won't step into it right away.
-
stealthsniper96 What Was I Thinkin'?
bring out the polls mr. jobs. -
Doesn't matter if there is currently a small market for Mac tablets, Apple makes an official one, rabid Apple fanboys and just about everyone else will snap it up (its Apple remember!?) and a huge market will be created.
-
Well, the general tablet market is pretty small right now...and as much as Apple's fan base can do many things, I don't think it can manage to make the tablet market a lot larger
.
-
I agree, Steve Jobs has been on such a roll. He is truely an entrepreneur, seems like whatever he does becomes a huge success. The iPod, the iPhone, the iMac, iTV (not so much) and the list just goes on and on. Maybe we'll see an iTablet, although I'm quite sure it won't be named that. I wonder what hip name he'll be comming up with next. He'll probably add a little option, name it something that makes it seem like a whole new concept. After that, sit back and watch people follow.
-
The Apple TV is unfortunate. It works really well, its just way too expensive and lacking some important features. Like if Apple offered iTunes movie rentals for say $3, that would be awesome.
-
how is apple gonna make a 1500 dollar laptop that comes with a SSD?
and is it going to be a 13 or a 11 inch? -
Yeah, its probably an ultraportable, so 13.3-inch and under. No confirmation yet, as usual, but probably 12.1-inch.
-
Well, Asus pulled one off for $400/--. It's only 4GB but still ...
-
True, but everything about the Eee-PC is cheap. Small screen, slow old processor, old integrated graphics, only 512 MB RAM, free OS, etc. Everything in there is cost-cutting except for the SSD. For Apple to do the same thing that is powerful enough to run Leopard would cost significantly more than $1500. I could be wrong, but I highly doubt they will release a $1500 computer with a SSD. If you add in a modern processor, reasonable amount of RAM, faster networking, larger screen, newer chipset and graphics, plus Apple's margin, the cost just does not match.
-
Don't think it would cost more than $1500 - if you take the Eee PC as baseline for "as cheap as you can make it", there's $1,100 of improvements left. What would you end up with if you threw $1,100 on a Eee PC. Something marvelous!
Good screen, good battery, more flash... also they'll add that huge touchpad so you can control stuff iPhone-like.
I do hope there'll be a 1.8" HD option - I could do with 160GB. However much Flash they cram in there, it won't be enough. -
Maybe I won? The thing is $1800. Closer to $2000 than $1500... and it's not exactly a "Super Laptop" lolz
The SSD version is nowhere near $2000...
