I plan to use Parallels Transporter program to transport my IBM Z60M system to my new Macbook Pro. My IMB uses 4 pin firewire, and I think the Macbook uses 6 pin. So, can I get a firewire cable that will connect my IBM firewire port to my new Macbook Pro firewire port to use Transporter? 4 pin to 6 pin, I guess (?)

    Thanks!!

    Ted

<strike>Mac OS X does not support Firewire networking, so you will not be able to transfer data by just plugging a Mac to a Windows PC via Firewire.</strike> Your best bet is to use a crossover cable (which is cheaper and faster anyway), wireless access point, or external HD.

And kgeier, I should ban you for advertising :p

Are you sure? OP- I suggest using an external HD if you have one. Or maybe a standard ethernet cable? I'm pretty sure you can do it that way.

Are you sure OS X does not support FireWire Networking? Under Network Preferences, there is an option for FireWire. I have never looked into it or tried it.

As others have said, I'm pretty sure it's the other way around. I don't believe Vista supports networking over Firewire and XP SP3 removed official support for firewire networking too. OS X should still support firewire networking, which makes sense given that Apple is the driving force behind firewire.

Orite it seems I was wrong. OS X does support IP over Firewire, I must have missed something. So yeah, it is possible, but Ethernet would probably be cheaper and support a longer connection.

Parallels website says to use either firewire or a network to use the Transporter program to transfer the PC computer (XP Pro SP2 OS, all applications and files) to the MAC. Says "Parallels Transporter lets you to migrate your entire existing Windows or Linux PC system to your Mac in just a few simple steps. Now you can even use FireWire!" http://www.parallels.com/en/products/desktop/features/

    So, this doesn't really work?

    Thanks!!

Thanks! I believe I'll just use my network to do this--wont' have to buy a firewire cable.

Make sure you are on a WIRED network. It will be very slow on wireless.

Thanks. Yep, I thought of that--I use a wireless network, but I have data drops as well and will plug in for this. Wonder how long it will take to transfer the IBM PC image, apps, and files.

WHAT? :) i thought he needed the cable :)

yea, id go ethernet all the way. Why network over FW400? thatll just be a pain to setup on the windows side probably. Ethernet should be faster as well, as long as your connected via Gigabit.
