Does the macbook put out 5.1 through the headphone jack? I'm thinking about getting the z 5500 what would be the best way to connect it to the laptop? Usb soundcard maybe?

The optical out does support 5.1 via certain applications like DVD player. However if you're looking for something to hook up a multiple minijack system you'll need an adapter. I'd recommend this one.

I'm pretty sure the only way you can get 5.1 is through the optical out.

The MacBook has an optical output inside of the headphone jack. You just need a mini-TOSLink adapter.

Just remember that you'll only get 5.1 sound from movies and nothing else. Everything else is stereo.

Oh and your sig is misleading. EULAs have been laughed out of court. But I don't want to start that argument ;)

You can get sound out of all 5 speakers + sub from iTunes, but it won't be different channels for each speaker like true 5.1 Most applications only support stereo which will sound fine on your 5.1 speakers, but wont be true 5.1 surround.

installing osx does break the eula, and we can't discuss the details of it here, but that doesn't necessarily make it illegal.

i would still go for the minitos-toslink cable. you get better sound quality out of that thing, plus multiple channels for movies.
