can we make a group effort to collect these, and put them up on a filesharing site somewhere? i would like to install 64 bit vista, but i only have the 32 bit drivers that came with leopard.

    thanks.

I'm looking to get a MBP, and would love to do this as I have with Dell's M1330. I'm sorry I don't have one now and may not be getting one for quite some time, though. I'm still considering if i should wait on a new MBP build or avoid a 1st Gen and go with the current MBP.

the 1st gen macbook pro was a long time ago. several years now.

the product refreshes aren't that big of a deal. i don't think there is much worry in getting a new macbook pro if the only difference is a slight hardware upgrade. if there is a genuinely new product (like the current iphone, or the macbook air) i would wait until they go through a product refresh or two before buying. any modern macbook pro (including the future versions under the same general design) i would not consider first gen and i wouldn't worry about purchasing it.

there will always be a refresh to wait for, its best to buy it when you need it.

I'll probably wait until the Quad Core comes out in late 2008...which probably means Mac will get it early to mid 2009. What I've heard on the Macbook pro is that there's plans to do a complete redesign much like the transition from powerbook to MBP. Basically, it's getting an all metal frame and new MoBo. This is still rumor, though. The only thing I know is that I really like the video card currently on it, and I could really use the new Quad Core processor for some of the stuff I do. I suppose they'll come out with a 9600 by then...if it even fits. I just hope that it will have better performance than the 8600 with 512 ram.

I wouldn't put much hope on having a mainstream quad core MBP this year. The only quad core mobile chip Intel has planned for this year is a 2.53GHz Core 2 Extreme quad core expected in Q3. However, Apple has never put an Extreme Edition chip in a MBP since the 45W TDP is too high. The current MBP 2.6GHz option is a standard 35W TDP Core 2 Duo and not an Extreme Edition. (Extreme Editions have only been used as BTO for the iMac).

Mobile Nehalem isn't expected until 2009, since Montevina won't be launching until June this year, and it seems unlikely that Nehalem will bring mainstream mobile quad cores either since it still uses the same 45nm process as current processors. Mobile Nehalem chips might feature Hyperthreading though so 4 virtual cores are probably close enough.

That's what I'm considering, waiting until next year. That'll save me money, give the chance for the nVidia 9600 to mature...hopefully, and I have something to live on till then.
