    Just a quick question really....
My Macbook pro is 2 months old and I have already started seeing signs
of the gpu failure ie: no screen on boot up or wake, text flickering and ripples and lock ups on apps.
I have done numerous hardware tests as well as a few re-installs. But fter a few days the issues re-surface. Now that the new refresh is out are apple
repairing the logic boards with more possibly faulty 8600M GT chips or is there a chance that the affected machine will be replaced the new refresh, as it seems despite others logic boards being replaced with a new revision the gpu still fails and so on and so forth.
Is this a possibility or am I looking at getting my machine repaired numerous times?

    Cheers

I doubt it, since Apple is still using the 8600GT in its 17" means there are still a lot of 8600 available in stock.

Yeah, I figured as much but still was curious if it was a possibility.

Well, you could demand the new MBP because your current one is a defect product, thats what I would have done in your situation, and you have only had it for 2 months also, so I doubt you'd have a hard time getting the new one.

Yeah, I will try my luck with Apple tomorrow and see what happens.
Apple have also admitted to me that they are sure its a hardware fault and have no problems repairing it, I'm just going to see if i can blag a new one out of them as this machine is only 2 months old and already showing signs of gpu failure. Oh well, it doesn't hurt to try :)

    Thanks for the response guys!

Sorry but not a chance. The GPU is physically attached to the logic board. To get a 9600 GPU, you would need a logic board from the newer MBP's, which obviously wouldn't fit inside your laptop. They will replace a part with a part with the exact same part #. After 3 major repairs in a short period of time (which is very unlikely), a new replacement unit becomes an option.

Yeah, just make your phone calls cost Apple more than giving you a new laptop! :-D

Technically you could get the higher end logic board (if yours isn't the highest 15" already), but it'd void your warranty, and you'd have to buy it youself.

But atleast youd get a speed increase. Although for you, thats not the best option, since the laptop is only 2 months old ;p
