First off, I must say that the more I read about Apple and its OS the more compelled I am to do the switch.

    Just a few questions:

I currently have an external Lacie drive connected to my PC.........am I able to connect this to a new Mac and have it recognize all the files?? I remember formatting this drive before I bought it and it had options on how the different systems will read it......but I honestly forgot what I did. Any advice on this would be helpful......

And this next question is about the educational discount and Apple Care:

I really want a MacBook PRO...........but because I am short on funds, can I purchase the laptop now............and a few weeks later (after my next paycheck) purchase the Apple Care and the free iPod separately??

Thanks again for all your inputs!!!

    :)

If your external drive is formatted in FAT32 (which most are) then the Mac should be able to read it without any formatting. Under normal circumstances you have up to a year to purchase Apple Care after receiving and registering your notebook, but I"m not sure if that would apply to the free iPod deal. I honestly would call an Apple rep to field that question, or just hold on to the money for a few weeks and purchase your MacBook and the Apple Care at the same time (if you can wait that long) just to make sure you get it.

Mac can also read NTFS, it just can't write to it. So if you just need to read then NTFS works too. The iPod must be purchased on the same receipt otherwise you cannot get the deal. AppleCare may be purchased at any time during the first year.

What difference does it make if you get it now or a few months later or the last month? just get it when you got the spare cash.

You'll hear about how Apple is quality, and wonder why you need the AppleCare, well its quite simple it's not so much for faulty hardware as much as it is for the LCD screen. The LCD screen can cost as much as 250-300 dollars to replace. It's just good insurance thats all, plus if you sell it before warranty goes out, it'll fetch an even nicer price.

getting it in the last month will make your warranty like 4years... 1 for the included warranty and 3 for the extra you paid for... much like making use of the term warranty efficiently

having it on the 3rd month after purchase of the machine will probably get you 3years and 3months.... hehehe am i right?

AppleCare extends your warranty to 3 years total. No matter when you buy it. It does not add three years.

Also, xbandaidx was right, LCD's are expensive, more than he thought. The LCD in a MBP will run you around $700.

I knew it had to be at least 250 (which is more than what AppleCare cost, not sure what MBPs AppleCare cost however) but the LCD is generally the part of notebooks/laptops that make it so expensive, than follows internal components like the CPU.

Thankfully I had never had to replace an LCD screen on any of the PC laptops I had, but one of them I had was getting really bad before I got rid of it. Its nice knowing that I bought AppleCare knowing if I become unfortunate and something is wrong with my LCD it will be taken care of and I'll be saving a lot of money. About around 500-600 it appears according to Cashmonee (I took out how much I paid for AppleCare towards it)
