I really couldn't believe this myself, but OS X installs over 3GB of printer drivers. 3GB!!! Gaaah!!

They are stored in Library/Printers. Go in there, and delete whatever brand you don't need. Epson alone is over 1GB!! Crazy!

Anyway, more HD space for the win!

    Hope this helps!

Haha, yeah, on one end its all in convenience and ensuring that "it just works", but on the other end its wasting unneeded space for a lot of the population :p.

A 15 Gig image for a normal OS X install does seem a bit large. 3 gig for printers is a bit much as well.

But I don't mind one bit. I fought unsuccesfully to get the hp2500c series driver to install on windows xp home and xp pro. HP finally said they wouldn't support the printers and offered to sell me a new one at a discount. Like I was gonna make that mistake. Finally, I got lucky and the driver worked after repeatedly installing and uninstalling it. The download was 370 meg and the install required 1.4 gig free. That's right. 1.4 gig required for the installation of ONE HP PRINTER on Windows. And the process was probability based. It might work and it might not. Between installs, I was supposed to run an HP "scrubber" utility to get all the files left behind and registry entries left behind. Then I was to install again and hope for the best. I wasted an untold amount of time on this issue on my daughter's old XP home based HP mini tower PC. My son's XP Pro machine worked every time. I refused to allow that HP crap on my machine or my wife's machine. One thing HP phone support did tell me. The Mac driver was a lot better. Sure enough, the mac driver was "only" a 100 Meg download. The HP rep blamed M$ .net for the poor driver quality. For a while there, they didn't even sell a wifi printer. When the offered me a discount on a replacement, there was no option for a printer with the exact same capabilities. They have since come out with new printers but at the time (a year or two ago), I was in a bad spot thanks to Windows and HP.

When I powered on my kids' new Mac Minis, they found the printer (via bonjour - no ip address required). One click later and it was working. One click. Contrast this one click with hour upon hour of fighting a badly written driver. Even the mini's have 80 gig so 3 gig is not a high price to pay to avoid dozens of hours of troubleshooting and tech support calls. THANK GOD there are 3 gig of drivers and move on. That's 3 gig of problems solved in advance.

I thought you were going to say "Get a bigger hard drive". :D

1TB internal 3.5" drives are now at $230 a piece (doesn't do anything good for the laptops, but my tower might get a pair of them soon).

Now that they have dropped in price, it's time to look into some of those.

Removing garage band will free up several gigs as well.

Not to mention languages which takes alot as well. Usually I choose the printer I use and take off all languages, garage band, iweb, office demo, and only install the photobooth and end up with leopard of only 7gb.

I paid the same amount for my 3 1TB Hitachi drives (Best Buy, eh?). However, right now, it's not possible to get them at that price. $230 - 10% for Western Digitals is about the best you can do.

You can get them cheaper if they are on sale, but I've rarely seen them on sale. I'm waiting for this summer to hit before I buy another hard drive though. I want another Seagate drive, and they are still pricy.

I tried XSlimmer on some software. It said it "Slimmed it 60MB" but when I checked the app, it was the same size as it was. I have to say I don't trust this software, but that's just me...
