After I buy a MBP in the Apple store, will they let me return it on the spot if it's a lemon?

I'm worried about getting a lemon, since the apple store is almost a 2 hour drive from my house, and I'm leaving for China soon and don't have time for any crap.

I'm buying a 13" MBP, replacing my blackbook, I just wanna buy it, then open and inspect it in store, so that if there's any weird damage done to it, or dead pixels, I can simply say give me another. Will they let me do that if there is something wrong, and I do say give me another?

I usually buy used, specifically because the people I buy from have used the products and can attest to their non-broken-ness.

I doubt anything will be wrong with the machine, it's just that in Beijing when I'd buy new macbooks with/for friends, we'd always crack them open and check them out/make sure their not fudged.

Also, does the apple store in the US, honor 'acceptance letters' to Accredited Chinese colleges for the student discount/ipod?

I could get the same deal in beijing, but I'd pay a $400+ dollar 'import tax' lol.

And no I don't want to buy online, I'd have to drop another 50 for overnight shipping, and I'd rather spend that 50 on gas and buy other junk in the mall rather than wait another day or two for my precious.

Yes they will replace your Mac if there's anything wrong with it out of the box.

What I did with my new one (back in October 08) was this:

I bought the 2.53 model ($2,499+tax), went outside the store, sat down on a couch (it was in a mall) and I opened up the box only to find that the computer inside was the 2.4 model ($1,999+tax), with only 250Gb of HDD and 2Gb of RAM.

So I went back into the store and showed the guy who sold it to me. They apologized for the mess up and replaced it on the spot with the correct model. And then the guy gave me a $25 iTunes card. Just for the trouble :D

So if you find that there's something wrong with your Mac I don't think you'll have any problems taking it back into the store, showing the guy what's wrong (maybe get his name too, so it's friendlier). But also, should there be anything wrong with your Mac, don't hold back and show them you're not satisfied. You might get something in return.

Don't know about the student thing though...

Yeah dont worry about the replacing it. I'm sure they will.

The college thing wont work in the US. You should probably from the iStore in china then. Check if that offer is valid there (It's not valid here in india)

Just because I'm curious: In what store anywhere in the US do you walk in, pick up a product, notice it's broken, but then be forced to buy it?

Under most conditions there shouldn't be a problem exchanging it however there's no guarantee that if there's a dead or stuck pixel that they will exchange it without a restocking fee.

Well, yes, I see what you're saying, but this is more like you buy the product and then you get the box and see if it's alright. :p

I disagree. If you get use out of it, it wasn't a bad investment. Having new electronics is a good thing, because you have the benefit of a warranty as well as many other options as the original buyer.

It's only a bad investment if you buy it, and stuff it in the closet for it to sit unused.
