My laptop is being referred to as MacBook Pro (2) in name. Why is that and how can it be changed?

To answer your question, I've no idea. Probably because someone else had the name MacBook Pro when you connected to the network, so it appended a (2) to your system.
The only solution at this point is to return the system to Apple and DEMAND a replacement.
Or....
Go to System Preferences, click on "Sharing" And change your computer's name at the top.
I still say returning the system for a full refund/replacement is the easier solution. True story. -
thanks a lot !!! I've always wondered how to get rid of this ugly (2).

Damn I never know how many people had this problem. I am going to have to switch out this laptop to because the stupid Macbook Pro sign is on the bottom bezel, and every time i turn on my computer I see the stupid apple logo...
Annoying finder/login screen problem.
