You don't currently need an anti-virus on OS X because viruses aren't written to run on a MAC OS. There's maybe a handful out there that will but you'll never run onto them. An anti-virus running in the background would just be something to slow down performance if you don't actually need it. If you're looking for an anti-virus to run when dual booting XP/Vista then I would suggest the newest version of Norton or Kaspersky or something.

Uhh.. under Windows (if dual booting) you'll be better off with Avast or Comodo.

norton works fine on mac, we have installed it many times. You don't have the choices like windows, but then as said, there aren't a lot yet, but they are increasing!!

For a personal firewall under Windows I would recommend Comodo. As far as an anti-virus though neither of those will compare to a paid AV if you're serious about AV protection. Avast, AVG, and the likes are decent for free but don't rank that high against Norton, Kaspersky, NOD32, ect.

As a 20 year Mac user, I think your best bet for virus protection is Trojan or Durex. Never fails me.

I've yet to get a virus on my Mac (or me) using that method.

I would stay away from Norton. It's not good for windows and I hear a lot of people have issues with it under windows. Not sure how it is under Leopard though. For OS X, if you really want AV... go try ClamAV. It is THE AV for linux/unix systems.

    Norton is overpriced imo
I can get 36 month antivirus pro from mcaffee (same as nis) for $80
I can get 12 month nis for $50
    and mcaffee has better results

Stay away from Norton's! Their software embeds itself into your system and defends itself from being removed. It causes more problems than it solves, especially in OS X.

You wont need anti-virus for OS X for another year or two at least(which is when Apple will hold enough market share again to become a target).

No need to get antivirus, seriously. The AV software is probably going to cause more trouble than it'll fix.

i personally hate mcafee..... you don't see a lot of people running it, imo

norton 2008 works very well on mac- it is fully redesigned and nothing like 2005, 2006 versions.

kaspersky, nod32 and bitdefender are the top rated windows programs

but it's all a matter of personal prefernece!!!!!!!!

Why would you use anti-virus on OS X...? It's not even needed yet.

Norton for Mac is a SCAM.

That's very true. It'll slow your system down, nag you alot, and be completely worthless.

Just a quick mention about market share though.. Back in 1980, Apple had a 15%+ market share. Of course they were the pioneers of the personal computer, and were one of the first companies to sell them....

All the protection you really need when shopping online is the little lock icon on the top right of the browser. Other than that.... there really is nothing to protect against.

Older versions of Norton were a little heavier running and weren't as good as some of the other available options but the latest version of Norton is ranked pretty high, even above Kaspersky I believe so I would probably check it out. You'll run into issues at times with any AV so you just have to try it and see. Most people talking about Norton have never even used a recent or the latest version of Norton to make an opinion on it. Personally I would go with Kaspersky myself but I'm a bit of a KAV fan.

I can usually get either one for free or very cheap after rebate so I definitely don't pay those prices. And I'd like to see the tests that hsow McAfee with batter results than a recent release of Norton.

Hehe, thought I remembered it right. Was watching some top ten thing (think it was top ten human technology or something) and the PC was one of them. They talked about Steve Jobs and... another Steve making the Apple 1 in their garage :p And then the Apple II which apparently was really successful.

I went with the Mac Version of Norton 11 or whatever, very new version, works well with Leopard. All installed and updated...

took about 3 minutes WITH updates...when the PC version takes an hour to get working.

EVEN NORTON WORKS BETTER ON MAC!!!! Whats next???

    Im a convert for life!

Have you tried that version on Windows? I've heard the latest version of Norton is a pretty big improvement over the previous.

Well obviously you're supposed to only use your credit card on trusted websites. No matter what level of security, if you're giving people your card number left and right regardless, you're screwed.

    it really is!!!!!!!!!!

we install it on a lot of computers.....good support...easily configured. It's got a great anti- phishing feature, though if using Int. ExPlorer in windows, it has one built in now......... As does FireFox.

The latest review I saw had Kaspersky, BitDefender and Nod32 for windows.

People, People... We are talking about antivirus for Macs not Windows.
    I'm glad you're happy with it, but I wouldn't spend $50 for protection I probably wouldn't need.

Yeah... it's more like buying insurance for your home that covers flood damage, but you live on high ground, away from a river or ocean. It's there, but it's never going to be of any use.

Well I shouldn't say never. There may be a point when OS X will need protection... but until then I'm not going to be paying yearly for software I will never use :p
