I am getting a Macbook on June 13th, the day after I graduate, and I am wondering if there is any news on updates coming to the Macbook line during that time.

Should I just get it the 13th or wait untill I start university? (August 28th).

Though nothing has been announced, I'd wait until after WWDC to buy, just in case. Apple keeps things very quiet, so for all we know, a huge redesign is imminent. As was stated above, wait as long as you can, and buy when you need to.

It is hard to believe that Apple will release any significant update to their notebooks in June. As far as I can remember the line of MacBooks and MacBook Pros goes back to PowerBooks. The design was so similar that an unfamiliar person would not be able to distinguish between MacBook Pro 15.4" and PowerBook 15". MacBooks were design after the same pattern, just in plastic. One can also see that MacBook Air has similar design of the body, slimmed down of cause, and a keyboard resembling MacBook and not MacBook Pro. If any significant redesign would happen than it would be MacBook Pro, possibly very different keyboard. MacBook would possibly just be made of different material - aluminum, with minor design changes, possibly something similar to MacBook Air, again, if it will be redesigned at all.
But most importantly, there is no any new CPU expected in June.
A very significant update will be in December-February - Nehalem platform.
So I don't see so much reason to wait for June, if wait than for the end of the year.

Definitely wait until WWDC, at least.

It seems like you don't need it now, and if any updates are going to be announced they will likely be announced then.

I suppose it depends on what you consider significant. Montevina platform will be launching in June, which will bring up to 3.06GHz 1066MHz FSB Penryns up from the current 2.6GHz 800MHz FSB in the MBP and MB in the same 35W TDP and will also bring 800MHz/1066MHz DDR3 SODIMMs up from 667MHz SODIMMs. MacBooks will also benefit from the GMA X4500 which is supposed to be much faster than the current GMA X3100.

A new platform from Intel is coming in June. It is called Centrino 2 (aka Montevina). Every major notebook manufacturer is updating to this. If Apple doesn't then they will be way behind. The Macbooks are due for a design update, I definitely am tired of the white plastic.

Also, Nehalem for notebooks is coming out in Q2 of next year, most likely near summer.

Sorry, somehow I thought that Montevina will not bring a significan speed bump, but actually it will:
Montevina platform is scheduled for release at Computex Taipei 2008, taking place on June 3-7, 2008. Montevina will support Penryn, Intel's 45nm die-shrink version of Core 2 processors.

    - The Montevina platform consists of:
Processors - a second-generation Intel Core 2 Duo (code-named Penryn) 45nm processor with 1066 MT/s FSB with clock speeds ranging from 2.26 GHz to 3.06 GHz, also featuring SSE4.1 support, which adds 47 new instructions to SSSE3. It is planned to consume no more than 29W, compared to Merom's and first-generation Penryn's 34W TDP.
an Intel Mobile 45 Express chipset (code-named Cantiga; GM45, GM47 or PM45) with Intel's GMA X4500 graphics technology and ICH9M southbridge, 1066 MT/s front side bus. The graphics core GM45/47 is expected to be clocked at 533/640MHz which will contain ten unified shaders, up from the GMA X3100's eight.
    RAM supported for DDR2-667, DDR2-800, DDR3-800 and DDR3-1066 SO-DIMM.
NAND flash-memory caching branded as Intel Turbo Memory (code-named Robson 2).
    Gigabit Ethernet LAN controllers 82567LM and 82567LF (code-named Boazman).[6]
Main support for DisplayPort with an external connector attached to the motherboard along with full supplemental support of HDMI, DVI, and VGA standards
    Wireless Modules
the Intel WiFi Link 5100/5300 mini-PCIe adapter (code-named Shiloh), and the add-on card WiMAX (802.16) (code-named Dana Point), or
the Intel combo WiFi/WiMAX Link 5150/5350 mini-PCIe adapter (code-named Echo Peak).

i guess it just depends on what YOU want...word on the street is there is something in the works for an update in the summer...so if you can wait around and see if that is the case, then i would wait...but if you want a new toy to play with during the summer then you know what to do...

Montevina is around that time, so its hard to say. Also, the Mac notebook lineup is due for redesigns as well. If you can, I'd suggest waiting as long as possible. Since you won't really need it over the summer, wait until you need it in August, I'd say.

Unless, of course, you buy it only to find an update 3 weeks later :p

Depending on if anything has changed by June 12th I think I will just get it that day to familiarize myself with the OS. I don't want to have to deal with any problems using the laptop for the first time on my first day of uni haha.

Or wait till a month before your schooling starts? A month is plenty of time for you to get familiar with everything. Most people get the basics down within the first day and are easily comfortable within a week(using the computer everyday of course).

I actually did the same exact thing.

I bought the iMac in my sig so that I would become comfortable with the OS before buying a MBP for college.

In all honesty, it was kinda a waste. I bought it in March in anticipation of college in August. I figured I'd be safe and budget a large amount of time to learn the OS.

Turns out, all I needed was 2-3 days. You'll be fine with only a day or two to learn how it works.
