Safari has a built-in pop up blocker that works very well. Check your settings. From the menu bar choose Safari and make sure "Block Pop-Up Windows" is checked.

Safari is the default browser on Macs... so like most mainstream and common pop-up blockers the developers for those ads spend a lot of time learning how to defeat it.

In order to defeat your pop-up blocker, they probably used some other method... Java comes to mind.

Note that this might mean disabling something in order to get the pop-ups to go away.

I'd move away from Safari... their development cycle and rate of actual improvement is among the worst in all browsers.

Firefox with the AdBlock add-on worked very well for me, though I still prefer the total package of Google Chrome. It's not that Safari is a bad browser--I think it's a very respectable browser--but I prefer Chrome or Firefox, personally.

AdBlock is also available for Safari. There was another ad blocking program that I really liked but it doesn't work with Safari under OS X Lion. It would block every type of ad whether it was embedded in a YouTube video, came on before another Flash video, and pretty much everything else. The only ads that it could not block were the ones that came up while watching videos on Hulu Plus. I miss that ad blocker, I just wish I could remember its name.

    A) Use Chrome
    B) Use Adblock Extension
