Before I go out and buy the 15 inch macbook pro retina display, was wondering if someone had a clue regarding of an upcomming 17inch retina display macbook pro ?

no one knows... but its unlikely. They've never stopped selling 17" machines before, even when they didn't update them for a while or kept selling an older version... this time, they pulled them altogether, so the rumor is they'll never do 17" again. No one knows for sure, they could have one.

Given that they're still selling old-style MacBook pros (which is odd in of itself) at 13" and in particular at 15", I think there's a good chance they killed the 17" from their lineup at least semi temporarily

17" is dead for the foreseeable future. Never say never but doesn't look to be in Apple's plan.

Maybe a retina 13" then?
With a 640M 1GB DDR5? -
but the 17 inch line up has been killed for now op -

In all actuality, I wouldn't be surprised if Apple kills off the old style MBP line all together. Although I think the current RMBP is overpriced (and will eventually come down similar to the MBA), it is still a better financial option than the 15" MBP as that sticks out like a sore thumb. Even the 13" MBP is overpriced compared to the 13" MBA.
As much as I would like a 13" RMBP, I don't really think Apple would release a 13" notebook that starts at $1700 (a little over the price that most companies charge for their top-of-the-line 17" models).
Right now it appears that the 17" MBP is not coming back as the 15" RMBP is currently occupying its higher price range. On top of that, it looks like Apple is completely killing off the old style MBPs and is shifting towards much thinner, lighter units with SSDs.
Any idea if a 17inch retina display will come out ?
