I know I told myself that no more upgrading for a while but that 17" hi res mbp in matte looks really tempting.
If I do succumb to temptation, I might have to flip my 2.53ghz 15" mbp on ebay and order one of the 17" bad boys in matte.. Anyone else feel the same way?
And if I do plunge for one.. I think I'd get the 2.9ghz model and wait to upgrade to 8gb later on.
But there IS one good reason to wait, is the Nehalem Mac Pros...

Me.
I love the screen and the Battery Life, but the price is unbelievably high. It's still a battle between the Dell Studio XPS 1640, MacBook Pro 15" and 17" for me right now. -
They are nice but I have just got a quote that allows me to get a Hp 8730 mobile workstation with a gfx card about 3-4 times as powerful, while still being quite small for about the same price.
Depends what you want... Looks, or power I guess.
regards,
Simon -
I could get a Dell M1730 with SLI 8800M GTXs, T9500, BD-ROM, 640GB and a Backpack for EVEN less than a MacBook Pro 17" but I hate the style of the Dell.

We have decided we are no logner buying any more APPLE computers till they support Blu RAY.
We love blue ray too much ...
Sorry Apple but we have found Sony to be the better brand VAIO is now the product we will buy in the future. -
You should get a Vaio AW. $4000 at Sonystyle.
-
Do you have the direct link to that sony style vaio aw? i cant find it.
thanks in advance. -
Don't worry tyronne, I think Snow Leopard will bring support for Blu-Ray.
You ever consider running XP in Boot Camp and then using an external drive? -
wait till the bugs iron outs. snow leopard. they still have that 9400/9600 switch that require relogin. silver zinc battery will be out sometime soon.
-
yes i have but i am using vista and vista fries my laptop it gets so hot i had to shut it down.
-
Really?
That's odd. -
yeah if you boot camp to vista it will fry your laptop or overheat or get so hot you could cook an egg where the laptop is sitting on.
-
-
i dont know how it could go wrong vista gets extremely very hot with all of our 3 mbp laptops as compared to when we use mac os.

is the difference big?
-
I don't think Blu-Ray and HD movies are a big difference apart from one another. I think people associate Blu-Ray with the best picture quality and best overall type of HD movie because of the name. Blu-Ray is sometimes represented as a status symbol, but I'm sure that's NOT the case with Tyronne. It's mainly just a personal preference when it's all said and done.
-
I d/l all my bluray movies in h264 in .wmv or .mkv files and comparing both the 9-12gb mkv/wmv with full dts bluray movies of the exact same release of a actual bluray disc played using a ps3, I cant tell the difference whatsoever. -
-
There is a difference between Blu-Ray and the HD movies you see on like iTunes and even torrent rips. The bitrates on the Blu-Rays are usually higher, of course the sound encoding is better, and the transfers are cleaner. They aren't degraded like they are on torrents or compressed like they are for iTunes. There is a difference between the two if you place the images side by side it can be night and day, but you guys have a point, Joe Schmoe probably won't notice it.
Thats from a HDrip of TDK, granted its not as good as the blu-ray (this image is not really telling, but there is pixelation in other scenes that just aren't there on the Blu-Ray, and the image isn't as sharp) but it still looks good. -
When your viewing the bluray ripped or the actual movie, you would be watching it from far away and would never notice.
Of course its a different story for movie renderers who see it close up frame by frame. -
I want blu-ray technology not for the movies but for the storage media. In that sense it blows everything else out of the water.
-
Also physically a couple of TB drives will save you space than 10's and 100's of bluray discs and I think it blows the bluray out of the water in terms of storage. I still think bluray discs are just over hyped and not really necessary.
Soon as SSD drives gets cheaper, it will do away with any kind of discs in the future anyway.
I really dont understand why so many people want a bluray player, I feel like its just something Sony started overhyping and just seems like an awesome thing to have and it just sounds cool.
Not to mention you can reuse the TB HDD over and over again by erasing contents you dont need and just storing new media.
And honestly I could live without bluray as long as there are external HDD in the sizes of Terabytes. -
i just looked at Sony AW 18" laptop - all i could say is yes it is true once you go Mac you wont go back to PC's.
The quality is chalk and cheese - Apple wins in quality and appeal but lacks in features such as no blue ray and no 1920x1200 native resolution.
Sony plastic body casing is horrendous. The plastic on the surface started warping real bad at the Harvey Norman Store in Osborne Park WA Australia.
I pressed down gently and softly on the warped area i was so embarrassed for Sony that they even made laptop with such embarrassing quality.
The idiot salesman parading as sales manager told me Sony built it like that on purpose - i shooked my head looked at him then walked away, this guy would have better luck as a car salesman.
Nothing can beat Apple's unibody casing. -
It's like having a sexy girl as compared to having to live with ugly fat girls. If you could live like that then good for you. I want a sexy girl and that's blue ray. -
10 terrabyte hd will not make up for blue ray quality movies.
i want quality and i want the best i wont settle for itunes movies never have and never will. -
^speak of yourself...I have Blu-ray on my hdx and never used it!also, have you heard that Wii and xbox are PWNING PS3,even considering the fact that they dont have a blu-ray?
Anybody else on the fence about the 17" hi res mbp?
