Ok I've been getting the hang of leopard and loving my mbp so I started searching for stuff I could use in replace of the windows counterpart. So I installed Adium for chat but not long after installing it wanted me to install growl which I did. I researched it and saw that it was some sort of notification system. Does anyone here have any feedback on this program? Some pros and cons and whether or not I should have it running. I'm really anal about having a clean system and if it does nothing of use I'll not have it on. Thanks in advance.

It's honestly no big deal to be sweat over it, even if one's obsessed with keeping their system clean. Just allows for nice notifications and you can customize (appearance, sound, etc.).

Growl is excellent. It is compatible with a number of popular applications, so they will all display notifications in the same fancy and colourful way like Adium does.

In case you didn't know, when someone logs on or sends you a message, that little box that appears on one of the corners of your screen, is generated by Growl.

I use Growl for notifications of things like my Gmail, Marco Polo, Adium, etc. It is a nice little program that gives you a more detailed notification than normally would happen.

I wondered the same thing as you when Adium asked me to install it... I am pretty OCD about putting software on my comp.

I like it's notifications though and it works with many of my third party apps like adium, istumbler and er, I cant remember the others, but I like it when the little bubbles appear and tell me what is going on :)

Ya it works with tons of apps. I just looked at my Growl preferences and it lists the apps that I have that it works with. There are easily a dozen, including Transmission, Acquisition, Transmit, Joost, Skype, SuperDuper!, Firefox, and Handbrake.

Alright, didn't know I could do that.

In addition to what I mentioned already, Growl tells me things when Handbrake, Flickr Uploader and Cyberduck are doing their thing.

    Which is rather splendid :)

Growl is good, I use it, event hough usually I dislike having lots of small apps running.
