Can anyone with a new 15.4" MBP tell me if they hear 3 loud "clicks"... almost
"knocks" when they insert a disk into the slot-load optical drive? I took a couple of my CD's to a local Mac store, and 2 of the demo units on display there did not make the sound I hear from mine. There are exactly 3 clicks (seemingly loud) upon insertion, and one similar click upon ejecting the CD. I'm not sure what's going on, but it does sound painful as the CD is going in. ANYONE????? Thanks in advance.....

I guess you're going to need to exchange it. And hope you won't have to exchange it again... Some NBR member have to exchange theirs over 10 times to get a perfect one, literally. One guy's on his 19th.
-
Mine has done this a couple times (I just received mine today). I kinda figured it had to do with the fact that it was slot loading and had to settle into place and I've been used to something different.
-
My Merom MBP 15.4 sounds painful going in, too. It's normal, sadly. It really is an ugly sound.
-
What is "Merom"? Wow, too bad about the awful sound. I don't think it's right. I will call Apple tomorrow, but I doubt they will acknowledge or admit to 19 exchanges. Hmmmm, not sure what to do here.
-
Merom is the processor prior to the current Penryn. My brother just got a new MBP and, guess what, the drive makes the same sound. It's normal. There's even an FAQ on the Apple site about it.
-
His 19'th???? Are you serious? Is it perfect now? What is his name on here? I'd like to PM him to see what the issue was, and if it was corrected...
-
Merom is the name of the processor. The new ones are Penryns.
After you call Apple, let me know what they said. I'm curious if I'm going to have to take mine in. I don't use CD's or DVD's very often so it might not be a huge deal to me but I don't want anything wrong with my computer. -
Any chance you have a link to the site? This one I am using now is an exchange already. My first one had a really slow optical drive, and would not "ramp-up" the rpm's when it was importing any cd's, but it did not make the knocking sounds this one is making.hmmmmmmm?
-
Yep here you go:

Just click and listen to Sample 1 on the "inserting disc" line. Makes me cringe just to hear it again! -
WOW !!!! Thanks alot. I feel a little better, however the first one I had did not make that awful sound, nor did the units I tried at the MAC store. I went early in the day when there was very few people and background noise. Anyhow, I sent an email to a specialist at Apple just now, and I'll see what he has to say................
-
You're not the first person to think something is seriously wrong when a disc is inserted. I'm right there with you on that one. My XPS M1330 didn't even sound this bad, and I thought that system was pretty awful sounding!
Enjoy your laptop and stop worrying about it. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple tell you to bring it in and have the drive replaced since they probably don't even realize what their own web site says... That wouldn't be the first time either...
Night! -
Hmmm.....looks like i have to test my system when it arrive next week.
-
Yeah, keep us all posted. I have sent this thread to Apple and they are looking into it.
-
Yep....this is my first mac & i hope it'll not fail me.
-
Looking into what? There's nothing to look into! It's already on their website as NORMAL, and having owned the MBP for about half a year, it is normal!
-
Well, like I said, my first unit did not do it, nor did the units at the Mac store. I wonder why people are sending back 10 to 19 systems then?
-
Well, don't listen to me then. Every single 15.4" MacBook Pro I've heard has that same noise as sample 1, and the 17" MBP I had recently made the same noise as sample 2. It's NORMAL. Some people are really, really anal and won't accept DESIGN as anything less than FAULTY.
-
drives are actually pretty junky in the MBP.
and slow. Im wondering if the slow read speeds are drive related, or if there is a tPM chip in the MBP preventing the drive from revving up.
google TPM, youll crap a brick. -
The drives are definitely slower than other drives of its ilk. But nothing too bad, and considering how much I use my DVD drive, it's irrelevant for the most part. This is why I consider the Air a step forward. Me lub my Air! Even if it's only mine for another 6 weeks.
-
im getting <1MB/second on most my stuff.... id say thats more than "nothing too bad"
been replaced, no avail. -
HUH??? What is this in reference to?
