Running on MBP's or Pros?
I'd be interested in the noise in comparison to e.g. the Pro, and how reliable the iSCSI initiator is.
-
I dont but I can hunt one down to take a peek if you would like
Update: Called a collegue and she said hers is next to dead quiet just add drive noise, and no issues with the iSCSI initiator after 4 months. Their unit is the rackmount unit .. apparently the power supply does warm some but nothing too notable. secondly the powdercoat paint chips when mounting the rails. but hey that dont mess with functionality.
I cant give you any more infromation as I have not had my hands on one yet -
Everyone that I know that has a Drobo sersiously raves about them. They said it will make you believe in God.
-
Yep, I like my 4 bay unit
-
I'm looking to purchase one for my production company. Mind telling me what you use it for, how have you connected it to your system and how it's assisting you in that purpose?
-
This is the best part. They are mad ez to use. Put in drives plug in Firewire and turn on.
If you got the 8 bay Drobo, even better. You got iSCSI -
I use it as a large NAS drive with mirror, I use WHS for backups
But yes they are VERY simple and extremly reliable units can configure them for a thousand purposes -
Also - are there any HBA's which work with the DroboPro on the Mac?
I haven't looked into it with any depth so correct me if I'm wrong, but knowing Apple there's highly likely to be no TOE implementation on the gigabit ports on a 'Pro' (ha) so I can probably expect some pretty slow writes even on a high-performance switch, correct? -
HBA's...... not that I have ever seen.
TOE .... not frigging likely
, they would have to buy better quality network components. I did try some stupis third party software solution that was beyond useless... cant remember what it was called now. And YES I should have known better !!!!!!
but yes if you got the infrastructure in place the MBP's will seem like snails on your network for writes -
well - I was thinking more the 'Pro' (ha) than the Macbook 'Pro' (ha x 2). The chipset on the Nehalems at least should support TOE if I'm not mistaken, but I'm presuming that it's not a feature?
-
If they use the X-58 chipset it is quite possible they MAY have it enabled, you know how they love to nuter chipsets.
Or if it is the older P55 I doubt any onboard will support it and you will have to move to an external card, and that can be fun too
I dont have a current datasheet on the new Pro right now but the previous gen sure didnt do it
-
Can't comment on the pro drobo, buy my 4 bay is going great... I love it.

I guess I'll give the Pro a go despite my iSCSI-on-Mac reservations. I don't see anything else which is domestically orientated and has the same features, and it's dead cheap for what it seems to be - Can't hurt, I hope.
-
I love the packaging the Drobo comes in.
It is very attractive. "Welcome to the world of " something something something.... -
Unboxings have to be the dumbest element of the dumb 'reportage' that Web 2.0 can provide.
-
I agree. It is a filler.
Anyone have a DroboPro?
