My friend has had his macbook from when they first came out. And he does not use any other case. And there is 1 chip where the screen meets the wrist rest.

I would think that just like any other laptop thats plastic, if you put it in a situation where it will chip, it will obviously chip.

So just be careful with it? I really doubt that it would just chip on its own. Get a sleeve or some kind of protection.

for over a year my schools library have been renting out macbooks to students at least 5 times each per day and as far as i can tell none of them have any chips or cracks. so yeah i doubt it will chip away on its own.

it's a black macbook if that makes any difference.

I've had two MacBook's - both chipped where the screen meets the wrist rest within 2 months.. I'm getting repaired and selling it - and afterwards buying either an Air or Pro..
Other than that - the MacBook is a wonderful machine! :D it's amazing :)

Like sulkorp said, it's plastic so yes it can chip. It really depends on how you treat it.

I agree, without ever owning one it just makes logical sense that it will chip if it is dropped as its made from plastic.

According to the guy in the Apple shop they now have a grey plastic around the keyboard and for the palmrest to avoid the yellow discolouring, so it's no longer a problem.

I saw this Grey plastic today on the demo one and he said his one at home is all white.

My white mb just lost a little strip of plastic from the keyboard covering just above the IR sensor (front right). Probably due to my right hand resting there all day everyday for ~2 years. Its about 1mm wide by 50mm long, not a big deal, will fill it in with some white putty glue over the weekend.

    Underpantman,

Is the palmrest on your macbook the white plastic used on the rest of the machine? Just want to confirm they used to be white, the current ones are definitely grey plastic for the palmrest and keyboard surround area. It doesn't look as good but serves a purpose I guess.

To me it looks a bit grayish. Definitely no white, but then it has been thru the trenches for about 2 years so it could be just fading. Although I definitely don't have the yellow discoloration issue.

Same thing happened to my MB. I treat it with care but there is a crack on the palm rest above where the IR is...I have AppleCare, would they fix that for me at the apple store? It's my main computer and I'd hate to be without it.
