I've been hunting for a good notebook for a while now and so far I have been hard pressed to find any that fits my requirements better than the new MBPs; but the price is just too high for me. I was just wondering if anybody has been able to get rebates, coupons, negotiations, etc. to get the price below 1800. Mind you I'm talking about the new versions of the MBP with the 8600 inside.

If you're willing to look into refurbished MacBook Pros, I found you this MacBook Pro for $1899 US. Lowest I could go.
Refurbished MacBook Pro 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
15.4-inch widescreen display (not-LED)
2GB memory
120GB hard drive
6x SuperDrive (DVD+R DL/DVD±RW/CD-RW)
ATI Mobility Radeon X1600 with 256MB of GDDR3 memory
Refurbs are great deals and usually go really fast. If you can catch this before its gone you're lucky
.

Well, if you don't mind refurbs, you just missed the 1699 Santa Rosa 2.2ghz Macbook Pros at the online Apple Store. I'd keep an eye out because they seem to update that constantly with new refurbs.

MBP 2.2 GHz with educational discount is $1799. I guess you can find someone you know who's a student/teacher to buy it for you. They don't even ask me for my student ID when I got mine from Apple Store. They just asked for driver license.

Titanium Crowbar - $100
Economy Leather Gloves - $2
Ski Mask - $15
Bolt Cutter - $20
Loot Sack - $10.00
Total: $147.00
Optional Expenses:
Fine for Petty Theft -$400 (variable)
Lost wages due to being in jail for 6 months - variable -
Really, pac1687? Wow, that is cheap for a Santa Rosa refurb.
And dugdug is right, if you can qualify for Student Discount you get your MacBook Pro for $1799 and a free iPod Nano that you can sell if you want. -
Yup, 1699 just last night.
-
Ditto, stay on Apple's website for refurbs and Amazon for used ones. One note, you can't say that you have found nothing to fit your needs other than the MBP but still complain it's too expensive. I hate saying this but it should be more expensive in this particular case. Many new potential Mac switchers say the same thing that nothing in the industry is as great as the MBP for their needs but complain about the price. If nothing else compares to the MBP by logic it should cost more than the rest.

HeHeHe ...
-
Well you see, it can be possible to have your cake and eat it too
And I'm sure there are plenty of notebooks that compare in performance or features, just with that one killer flaw. For the 1420 it was its battery life, G1s it was the weight and gaudy design and again price, w3j had heat issues and uses ATI (no no for the linux user), dell 1330 is just too weak graphically for me to justify its price, etc etc.
And thanks for the suggestions, I am a student BTW (prob should have mentioned that). Is there anyway to use a student discount on a refurb MBP? -
Nope, education discounts only apply to the new Macs.
-
Well, put it this way,
New MBP 2.2 GHz with educational discount : $1799
Free after rebate Ipod Nano 4GB = $199
Free after rebate Printer = $99
Total = $1799 + $199 + $99 = $2097 + tax
minus
IPOD rebate = $199
Printer rebate = $99
Selling the IPOD on ebay = $190
Selling the printer on ebay = $90
Net price to you = $1519 + the tax for $2097
It's going to be less than $1800. -
i keep on telling ppl to ship it to a friend in oregon and avoid sales tax.... then its much cheaper
-
Honestly though, I doubt you'd be able to sell that printer for $90...
-
masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
it doesnt matter, you could sell it for $20, or you could keep it if you need it. its free with a rebate.
-
yep i needed a printer for my dorm room anyways so it saved me 100 bucks that i would have had to spend anyways, and i didnt have an ipod so I was going to buy one anyways. I thought it was a great deal!
-
Well you do pay sales tax on it...so as long as you get that back, it's all good..
You could even donate it to some charity for full value and write it off on your taxes at the end of the year too. -
also some states have the no sales tax edu special this weekend, I know NC does and it has an apple store, SC does also but no apple store ( the retailer has to have a store location in the state.) just thought I would bring that up.
-
Then the friend has to ship it to us and pay for shipping. There's no win, win.
-
where can i find the option for education discount at apple.com? i´ve been searching and i don´t find it
-
Wow lots of great responses guys, thanks. Just wondering though how long these rebates are taking to be returned. Is there anybody who has actually used the student discount and received the rebates, who can weigh in?
-
From time of mailing to time of receiving checks - under 1 month for me.
Anyway to get MBP for less than $1800
