Apple Introducing "state of the art new products at prices their competitors can't match"

During Apple's financial results conference call Steve Jobs said that a lot of the existing Mac lineups will get product transitions (new MacBooks and MacBook Pros?). Along with that, is a really exciting quote from Steve Jobs that we've all been waiting for:

"Apple is going to be introducing state of the art new products at prices our competitors can't match"

If MacBook Pros finally have competitive pricing, I'll probably pick up one of those, without a doubt. Apple's kept their $2k price point for the MacBook Pro for too long, I'm excited to see their prices that "their competitors can't match".

You happen to know about when this will happen? A couple months from now, or a couple years?

 

By "can't match", do they mean: "can't justify such an equally ridiculously high price"?

Heh, anyway: My guess is "state of the art new products" will involve multi-touch displays in some way. Maybe a Mac tablet or some kind of touch Cinema display? I can't really see Apple dropping the prices of their Macs, so if they're going to be 'competitively priced', I'm betting it's going to be something proprietary and new.

 

It seems be for next quarter, Stunner, from the looks of the way they say it.

What I'm wondering about is "product transition"?

I would like to see a redesign MBP at a more competitive price as well. That would be one awesome notebook.

 

perhaps a macbook air with a sli nvidia 9800m gtx and extreme processors? that'll be the day lol.

but a cheaper macbook pro or macbook would be awesome, especially a macbook at 500 bucks or somethin

Well the "prices their competitors can't match" statement has been clarified somewhat. It points to new products with unique features that justify their pricing rather than major price cuts. Which, makes perfect sense, since if Apple decides to go into a price war with Dell or HP, they'd lose, since they don't have the volume to fight for the best bulk discounts.

I hope there are smaller price adjustments though for $100-200. This would return value to customers since current gen MBPs now use tier 2 and 3 mainstream processors with the tier 1 highest-end processor being a BTO whereas before MBP used tier 1 and 2 processors directly.

And if only us Canadians finally get price parity in the next refresh.

Well it's all happening with in the next two months, they said by the end of September, So I'd say the second week of September? So at least we don't have to wait long.

 

Hoping for a head-less iMac... if nothing transpires in the next 2-3 months I'll just... well... do nothing.

 

I can't see them having an iMac with no monitor, otherwise it wouldn't be, well, an iMac. I do think that the Mac Mini will see a redesign though, since the Small-Form Factor Penryns in Montevina and their lower TDPs give them more options. Sadly, that'll probably mean that the Mac Mini gets even smaller rather than becoming an expandable mini-tower.

Different competitors in different areas. In the Mac business, hardware-wise the competitors would be Dell, HP, Toshiba, Acer, Lenovo, Sony, etc. Software-wise it'd be Adobe, Microsoft, etc. In the iPod business, it'd be SanDisk, Creative, Microsoft, etc. In the iPhone business, the major one is the Blackberry, and the other smart phones. In the Apple TV, the other movie services like Netflix and such.

 

First I was planning to get a refurbished MBP with 256MB G86 but then I hear that they're faulty so I change my mind to the Gateway M-6864 with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 2600 with 512MB graphics, and now they plan on making new products?! Jeeze.. its a roller coaster ride that I cant get out of. Hopefully Apple actually revamps the Mac Mini with a better GPU. I would totally buy that!

 

Gotta love Apple. What a great earnings report, a far cry from the doomsday Bear Sterns scenario. Lets see what they have in store for us.

 

I'm waiting for a big refresh of the iPod lineup, hopefully more iPhone/touchscreen/retirement of click wheel. And redesigned Mac notebooks, please! Introduction of midtower Mac desktop? Tablet?

Very good point sam. Yeah in the hardware area i do believe dell and Hp are competitors. But you really think adobe is a competitor in the photoshop department?

 

Adobe, in the sense that Lightroom challenges Apple's Aperture, Premiere Pro CS3 challenges Final Cut Pro. But otherwise, Adobe owns the design market and Apple doesn't look like it plans to challenge Adobe in that area.

 

If any of you have learned anything it's the earnings and earnings targets are CRAP. It's called Earnings Management. The majority of companies do it to some extent or another, hiding expenses until they have to use them and saving income for when they need it...I guess that's all part of the game though.

Three cheers for Apple...if they lower prices.

While I know its all just a guessing game, on the business (read non-techie) side, there is some suggestion of updated iPod and potential notebook redesigns. I doubt we'll see a $999 Apple notebook as the article suggests, but we can have irrational hope right?

Well, no updates today. Guess there's always next tuesday.
Many at macrumors are saying August 5 is a possibility, it not only falls on a tuesday, but coincidentally Intel is officially releasing their GM45 chipset that day too.

 

Second Tuesday of September, If they where going to do it in August they would of said by the end of August not by the end of September, But who knows.

 

I doubt they do it in August while the itouch promotion is happening. They're products are selling very well right now. The local FutureShop only had a couple in stock

The things are already selling like hot cakes. Especially with everyone hating on vista (for no good reason mind you).

I just hope that if they do update it's in the next 10 days or so, so i can upgrade. I believe Future Shop only offer 14 days to upgrade

I'd really like new ipods so i can grab one of the older ones for cheap. I think they should also upgrade the mac mini

 

I was looking at a walmart flyer and they had 8 gb ipod touch for $179 Canadian. That's cheap. Maybe a sign of new Ipod touches?

 

I don't know about "new" but they should definitely drop the price. Maybe they'll drop the 8 gig, give the 16 the 8 price tag, and the 32 the 16 price tag. Would be nice to see a 64 with the 32 price tag but I doubt that.

 

That will probably be my next computer. I like the air but a tablet of its size would seal the deal for me.

Yeah, that's my plan. I couldn't find $130 to get Leopard, and over time...well, its just not as exciting to get it as it was. Tiger's running fine for me, so I'll just let it stay as is for a while. I'll probably upgrade with Snow Leopard.

Speaking of keeping with older versions, I just downgraded my desktop to XP .

 

Can I ask why you downgraded Sam? It's been running good on my desktop... although my desktop does seem to chug a bit when rendering animations with Bryce... fortunately this weekend I'll be setting up a small render farm with the 3 new "acquisitions" of old computers family members didn't want anymore.

 

I've been running into issues with Vista. I gave it a few chances, reinstalled twice, diagnosed basically every hardware issue it could possibly have been. I've had random shutdowns and the computer locking up whenever anything graphics-intensive ran. So to just confirm whether it was a Vista problem or a hardware defect, I'm running XP for a week or two to see if I run into any similar problems. So far, its been three days and I've been error free on XP, while I ran into a Vista issue nearly daily.

 

Sam, there is always Windows 7! Microsoft should ditch WIN32 and come up something modern, lean, and fresh.

Anywho, a $200 price drop on MBP + case redesign would be sweet. Apple should try to fit slightly higher end graphics in their 17inch models at least. There is a demand for it.

 

$200? That's a fair amount; BUT, I can still almost buy 2 Dell Laptops with comparable specs for roughly the amount my brother paid for his Macbook Pro...

...and then I can place an apple sticker on the back of the monitor, and if I wanted install hackintosh and have enough money to put towards a desktop, or a nice big-screen TV, or a lot of big gulps.

 

Ugh, here we go again... it's apples and oranges meetloaf. They really cannot be compared in such a way IMHO.
So if you can get 2 Dell's for that price, then go buy a Dell.

And the whole "Apples to Oranges" thing is way too cliche here...my Orange does the same thing your Apple does (and arguably more)...just a different flavor. Maybe we should say yours is a Macintosh apple, and mine is a Pink Lady or a Jonathan apple.....YUM!

I've always been a dual-OS user...in fact, I won this MacBook . I will probably always be on Windows some time or another, so yeah...I am waiting for Windows 7, hopefully it is something better than Vista (it has to be ). But it seems like until then, this desktop is staying on XP.

 

Or XP is staying on your desktop.
