    Hey Guys,

Can anyone please let me know if Apple provides a complete check up of our laptop's (thorough hardware check up). If so, what is it called so that i can request one and normally how long does it take for this to be completed?

    Thanks in advance

What do you want? Do you want to send your MacBook off to have Apple complete a diagnostic on it? I'm pretty damn sure they don't do that. However, they will look at your computer if it is having problems and still under warranty. Other than that, you can still have Apple service your MacBook if it is out of warranty but I believe they charge $250 and more (for parts). You will likely have better luck if you take it into an Apple Store and have them look at it. They won't look at your notebook unless there is something wrong with it though. They don't offer a diagnostic for no particular reason. You can perform a self-diagnosis on aspects like the battery.

Thank you for your reply. I was thinking of something like getting it serviced since its nearly 4 years old and out of warranty. Isn't their 'servicing' like running a basic check up? all my questions i mentioned initially pertain to that

For a basic look-over, all they'd probably do is just stuff that you could do on your own (for free). Stuff like checking the battery state, SMART information on your storage drive, temperatures of your CPU and GPU, etc.

Right. Anything deeper would actually require a problem for them to diagnose and service. Like I said, you can't just hand Apple your notebook and say "look at it" unless there is a specific issue. So, unless you have an actual problem, you shouldn't worry about it as Apple can't do anything. Not only that but you would be spending a rather large sum of money towards a machine that is 4 years old. Technology always reaches a point where it doesn't make sense to service anything (unless its a simple $5 fix) and that normally occurs around the 3-4 year period.

Cheers guys. thank you for your reply. The reason why i asked this is coz my laptop was recently stolen and was recovered (thanks to iCloud the perp was caught) after 4 days since he accidentally switched it on whilst in a wifi hotspot. There doesnt seem to be any significant physical damage, hence why id like to run any checks to see if the computer is functioning like it used to. it seems normal as of now but I dont want to run into any issues further down the line

Sorry to hear that your notebook was stolen (but congratz on getting it back!). However, knowing that, I'd be more worried about your personal information being used rather than the condition of your laptop. If I was in your situation, I'd be checking my credit card purchases over the next month or so, bank account, Social Security, etc., if you haven't started already. Basically watch anything you've put on there like a hawk.

Laptops are unlike cars in that regular maintenance doesn't reduce overall costs.

Hey thank you very much for your concern. Luckily the thief wasnt able to get passed the login page where he wasnt able to hack my password. Plus, I had prey installed and all it showed was that thief was pretty much stuck with trying several passwords to login to no avail, and unfortunately for him, prey immediately connected to the nearest wifi network and thats how he got caught and at the same find my mac also got triggered. So, the laptop was pretty much recovered at very early stages before he could cause any further significant damage. Plus, I dont actually save credit card details on my machine and every website oriented login details were stored in 1password and he'd have to hack into that and retrieve the master password to gain access to all my login credentials. so all in all he didnt get any access whatsoever to my computer and i got lucky. plus the paranoid side of me did end up changing all my important passwords like email, icloud facebook etc. and no unknown transactions was reported from the bank. after all of this only i had this minor paranoia of having my computer checked out.

Well, there's always the possibility that the thief could have taken the HDD out to look at your files from another computer, but changing the passwords right away sounds like a great way to counter that.

So, was it icloud (find my mac I guess?) or prey that helped? I too was saved by prey as a theft that had been sold off to a computer pawn shop was discovered right away by Prey. Pity that the appeal and re-appeal process for the thieves meant that it would be 6 months before I got my computer back.

Sorry to hear that you also went through something similar but man 6 months is a long wait. For me, both icloud and prey worked but i personally think prey is more like icloud on steroids since It also captured a picture of the perp's face and a screenshot of what he was doing exactly on my computer. When it came to locating the computer i think icloud's find my mac almost fired instantly and prey just got triggered 4-5 minutes later but with more data. Guess having them both has its benefits.I was thinking of whether or not to have Orbicule (another security measure) installed on my computer, but i figured itll be over-kill plus orbicule actually costs more.

Anyway, hope your computer got back to you in one piece.
