Myth: Apple will produce a midi-tower that is well priced for the average joe and can be user upgradeable.
Fact: This rumor is as old as the hills, and yet somehow we all keep thinking at the end of each SJ keynote that it will have to come next time. I think I'm ready to give up on this one and call it dead/false etc.

i haven't read one of these myths is legitimate at all.
the hardware isn't more advanced, it isn't even comparable, hardware doesn't have anything to do with just the processor specs of a machine. Apple has consistently developed fully custom machines, besides the actual CPU, GPU, and HDD, sometimes even working with companies to develop a custom CPU, chipset, etc.
not even mentioning the actual HARDWARE used as construction material and construction method.
Mac's don't get viruses
unless you have specifically created a virus yourself and applied it to your system, this is not true, at least with 99.999999% of users.
OS X is not an impenetrable fortress, but either is any computer with a disc drive, ethernet, usb, firewire, wifi, bluetooth, uh, what else am I missing?
I HAVE A MAC MYTH:
PC files aren't compatible with macs.
and 1000 others about switching from a PC.
and just like the one I mentioned, all of them are easily cleared up with 1 visit to Apple's website. -
That may be an XP thing as I only had XP on my desktop but I can also attest to my Windows laptop working after plugging in an HDMI cable to a TV without needing to go into control panel at all.
THAT should be the new slogan.
Also, Circa, I have one question for you, if Macs dont get viruses, then this is just a scam right?
Myth: All Apple products are overpriced while giving the same thing.
Fact: Some of Apples products are of much better quality then comparable hardware, such as their Apple Cinema Displays -
Myth: Gaming on OS X sucks
Fact: True unless you only play WoW. Using a boot manager to run a different OS doesn't make your OS any better.
Retort: Escape Velocity is quite possibly one of the best games of all time... but is no longer a Mac OS exclusive game.
Myth: Gaming on a Mac sucks
Fact: False. You can run Windows on Mac hardware.
Depends what you're using it for. Apple Cinema Displays don't have as quick a response time as TN panels, so you're sacrificing top-end gaming for a beautiful display.
Similarly, you can get an equivalently nice monitor for your PC using the same technology as Apple Cinema Displays for basically around the same price. -
Sacrifice?have you tried gamin on it?
-
Most of the time, the response time is misleading fact. For starters, different manufacturers measure response time differently, some use grey to grey (usually 6-2ms) while others use black to white (usually 16-8ms, and is what Apple uses for their screens). Furthermore, like the refresh rate (Hz), response time becomes unnoticeable beyond a certain point (usually it's around 10 B2W, although some people claim they can notice more - not sure if they're boasting or not).

To all those criticising apple, if you dont want it, dont buy it...we apple lovers love our macs...BTW just got mine today...
-
Apple's got a great product right now. I've never owned a mac, but over the past few weeks I've been spending more time on them and I think they're awesome. I just can't stomach the price. This is a critical time for Apple, there are so many people who are unhappy with Microsoft and Vista and although a lot of people have switched to a mac, a lot more won't bother because Apple's prices are insane.
-
There prices are fair for what they are offering. The problem is that apple starts at the mid-range and goes up. The mb is there "cheap" laptop. But it would be considered to be mid-high range by Dell. If you slapped a dell sicker on it, Dell would not be selling them for 500, they would be going for $1200+
Apple and SJ have said numerous times now that they don't know how to build a cheap machine.
People need to stop comparing Apples product line to that of Dells/Acer/HP. Those guys provide full product lines, from the very low to high end gear. Apple only provides mid-high end stuff. Apple is more like Voodoo or Alienware, in that all these company's target a higher price bracket of consumers, and none of them have a "cheap" entry level machine.
In most cases (esp if you don't take apple upgrades) you get good value for money.. but you also have to place a $$ value on things like design, weight, & materials used.. etc etc which don't show up in a normal spec sheet showdown.
For some these things are important for others these thing are worthless and it is these people who keep saying apple is expensive.

Couldn't agree more. Apple really need to work on thier pricing. And I know this has been brought many times. But seriously, Apple Dell, HP blah blah blah they are all made in the same factories in China and Malaysia. Apple have managed through amazing marketing strategies, to continually over charge.
You can Purchase a clevo M860TU with a P9500, Bluethooth, 9800gts, 4 gigs of ram, 320 7200 rpm HDD, finger print reader, Built in webcam, Wifi ABGN oh and a Blue Ray player for about $2400 USD. Only downside is standard non LED display.
I paid a lot more for alot less in my mac. So we really need to put the old you get what you pay for aside. With apple you pay for the mystique(If apple lost that Mystique, people would really see Apple for what it is, Just another Company trying to make money lol) and you pay for the customer service. Still enjoy my MBP
-
There is also a price point that people will just not pay, and apple continually go beyond that point. With a more aggressive pricing option I strongly feel Apple would capture more market share.
Althought with more market share certain risks are inherented.
More system to manufatcure, increasing possible failure rates and lack of QC. Will your technical support staff be over run with calls, and unable to give the proper attention required. More use could mean more meanigfull attacks. Or more complaints filed regarding lack of driver support. Will your driver programming staff be able to keep up. Not everything works on mac mainly because it lacks proper driver support.
If the drivers where there, I think the Hackintosh community would be so so much larger. -
As I mentioned, SJ and apple admit that they don't know how to make a cheap laptop. And thus that ever gonna happen. Apple has the right not to make a cheap laptop if they don't want to, just as people don't have to buy an expensive one.
Your also forgetting the aluminum unibody, backlit keyboard, magsafe, weight and looks. These aren't easy to put a price on, and as I said if you don't value those things you will never be happy with the price of an apple. -
^ also, you can't say how much mac os x "costs"
-
There's also OS X (a big one) and customer support. Those are subjective when it comes to pricing too.
Edit: Xirurg beat me : / -
I am sure you ll be first next time

Are you saying macs are not designed to work on business networks?
I disagree... they can and do work on busines networks, it just takes some work or support system. (the same type that PCs require, just harder to find)
If you are implying that Mac users do not expect their Mac to do everything, I have to tell you you are definitely wrong. Every one of our Mac users expects their $1700 Mac to connect to everything and do it better than any windows machine... meanwhile the $700 PC laptop connects by plugging it in and entering the pertinent info, while the macs usually have hangups of one sort or another.
There are many things MacOS does well, (as noted by others Vista does the whole TV thing automatically too) but let's be honest there are weaknesses to the MacOS as well.
My point is that this advertising point is hurting Mac users as it makes them think they don't need to do anything or think, or plan.
I am not taking anything out of context as I react to what our Mac users actually need. I am NOT ripping on OSX, I think macs are quite viable... but they have weaknesses and are not god-in-a-box as some mac fanatics believe. I am also not claiming PCs or Windows to be flawless. (Heaven knows I deal with plenty of "head-scratchers" from Microsoft...)
The main point is that PC users who buy ANY PC laptop have a path to the network and will get on no matter how (in)capable the PC user is... for Mac users this is not the case. (remember, I mentioned that this is not the hardware or OS's fault as it does indeed work after some effort)
It needs to be said that in the case of a business network, macs do NOT always "just work". This is the heart and soul of the topic and is actually in Mac users' best interest to know.
PS.
As an addon, if you think MacOSX is safe from viruses or hacking you are deluding yourself. MacOSX is based on FreeBSD, which has plenty of malware. As soon as MacOSX has more people using it, it will become a bigger and juicier target. Be vigilant and protect yourself now. -
Not to be an a$$,but people are saying this last 5 years or so...
-
I just directly added a myth myself
.
-
Because OS X users are still in a small minority.
-
The purpose of using MACs is not for gaming, you better go with a PC which can run latest games for a lot cheaper. However, this does not mean gaming on a MAC sucks because it's all up to the hardwares you have and your OS compatibility. Therefore, it's a myth.....it just suck that you have to wait but now you really don't as MACs can run windows too.
-
He said "OS X", Not "Mac", and using Windows on a Mac is still using Windows.
-
well....at least the reality distortion field (trademark: Steve Jobs) is not a myth...
-
you forgot to add "False" after it
-
Thanks for the reminder, I forgot
. Added!

masterchef341 The guy from The Notebook
I know this is a ways back. I just thought that I would add that if you are running <=62 frames per second, and you have a 16 ms refresh rate, you are set. A lower refresh rate will not change what the monitor displays in that case.
Apple Myths. Please add yours.
