So I have a 2010" MBP 13" (one of a many I had, two had obvious in the center dead pixels, one scraped against the body when I closed the hinge, etc)

The new magsafe stops charging if I move it so they replaced that, wheh.

But my hinge makes a snap crackle and pop and I can't fix it. I tried sliding the hinge left and right, still does it. Some positions more than others.

Anyways, the genius was really rude and told me they all do it including his. I said my mom's aluminum macbook never does, he said it was a different hinge assembly.

He said try the floor models, they'll all be the same. I tried two random ones, no matter how slow I moved them, no clicking/snapping response.

I asked to speak to the manager who claimed it was a difficult problem to identify that would result in probably no repair and they didn't just have to replace the toplid, it'd be the whole hinge assembly -- admitting this right after saying he doesn't know the root of the problem because he is the manager, not a technician.

So the techie and the manager denied me service especially after being told they all do it and me putting his claim to the test.

The manager also said the floor models have been played with a lot and hopfeully mine will loosen up over time. I don't think so. It's not like I haven't been monkeying with the hinge since this happened and I can reproduce it every single time if I want to.

I also told him clearly they all don't do this as Apple wouldnt advertise a sleek macbook pro with popping and crackling problems.

    What jerks.

I saw some videos about this on YouTube yesterday. That sucks, some of the people on YouTube were able to send it in for repair. They came back with the clicking sound still though.

Yeah it's absurd apple doesn't recognize it as an issue.

Once it feels stuck, you gotta apply force to get that screen back down.

Are there any other Apple stores in your area? I would try going to a different store, or going back to the one you were at and give them some pressure. Tell them that you know it's an issue that other people have and that you demand results (you can either bring a REALLY hot chick or a REALLY scary guy, be sure he/she stands directly next to you at all times. That'll showem. XD). After all, you paid a premium price for the product and you have rights as a consumer. If their computers there have internet, pop onto YouTube and look up some videos of the hinges popping and other people giving testimonials of Apple doing work on their machines.

(Also, when I wanted my iPod replaced, I just kept repeating that "Dust under the screen is unacceptable!". Just spam "UNACCEPTABLE" and they will probably do something.)

Nah, you should bring a Windows PC that doesn't have this problem along with the Mac.

Say something like, " Hi, I've recently bought a Mac after using Windows all my life... ... and I wonder if this problem is only for my laptop I just bought brand new, or for all 13" MBP..."

You might get quick reassurance about the sleekness followed by an equally quick replacement.

    (And don't bring a Dell)

The snap or otherwise known as pop sound is a feature to let you know when you are opening your Macbook Pro. This is to avoid any confusion if you have your eyes closed and thus cannot see or tell if you are opening your macbook pro or your windows based pc laptop that might be right next to it because windows 7 is so darn amazing. :D

The genius at my Apple Store (Kenwood, OH) told me that it wasn't meant to be opened/closed in increments, but to be fully opened or closed completely every time.

I asked him if he always knew how far he needed to open his lid when he got his laptop out, and he said that the "click" was just an example of how firm and tight the new hinge system is.

This also happens on non-unibody MacBooks. I was almost convinced that it was a "feature" when I started hearing rumblings about other people not having this issue, and others having it worse. Mine's not so bad that it bothers me all that much, but I did pay $1500 for this machine, and in my mind, for that money, it ought to be perfect.

that is the Steve Jobs attitude to things... it probably permeates throughout the Apple supply chain.... just like the iPhone 4 antenna issue...

How firm the new hinges are? Don't they fall when you hold it at a certain incline?

Sux for the OP and I can empathize with the money spent and the brand image Apple has that the laptop should not exhibit those types of problems.

I remember the Nintendo DS Lite having a problem with the hinges that they would eventually get loose then start to make a clicking noise. They first passed it off as a non issue then with a little media exposure they decided that the problem will be fixed for no charge by Nintendo.

I used to buy Apple and i'm glad I have gotten away from that. Now I buy $400-500 laptops. If they break I donate them and buy another one. :)
