Does Apple ever upgrade some of the options for their MBP without going through a formal upgrade or refresh? For example, I am waiting for them to offer a larger and faster HDD and a faster DVD burner on the MBP. Will I have to wait for the next big announcement, or do they sneak those things in along the way? Thanks!

Apple rarely does minor announcements without warning. The MacBook's May update is similar to what you're looking for (minor HD upgrade, RAM upgrade), and it was expected (there were indications in the supply line of the update).

So yeah, Apple will most likely not suddenly sneak in some minor upgrades. It will be expected and be pretty evident through the rumour sites.

FWIW, the rumor sites did a surprisingly good job of predicting what would happen on Sept. 5th.

9to5 Mac is scoring pretty well lately. It got the new iMacs and all the new iPods, even the leaked Nano photos that proved to be true.

Apple does upgrade important components, especially accessories, rather silently: Airport Base Station, the MagSafe adapter, etc.

Other times, they'll upgrade peripherals as a part of a new release - for example the new universal docks in conjunction with the new ipod releases.

    Phil Schiller :p.

For those that don't know, Phil's the Senior Vice President of Worldwide Marketing at Apple, and essentially Steve's most trusted employee. He shows up a lot in the Apple keynotes.

Ummm... faster burner you might be waiting a while on that one seeing as how nobody in the industry has faster than an 8x burner in a laptop... too many constraints as of now including size, power, heat... etc... it will come eventually... but you will be waiting a long time.

I must be the only one who still holds a grudge at Apple not allowing me to upgrade my magsafe power adapter for free or cheap :p

They were willing to give me iLife 08 even months afterwards...dunno why they couldn't with the power adapter...bleh :(

See the problem with good service? Then customers start expecting it and get disappointed even when they had no real basis to go on anyway :p
