Good to see Apple finally getting off their lazy arse's in updating BootCamp for complete win7 support.
-
Don't give a rats behind about W7 support anyway. They need to put more efforts into Snow Leopard, THE OS THAT THEY MAKE FOR THEIR COMPUTERS.
-
I've been running Windows 7 (both 32 and 64bit) on a MBP and an iMac for a while without any issues; this BC update seems trivial to me. But the Flash security update is good to see.
-
Yeah win 7 64bit has been running fine for me. I'm almost reluctant to update. If it ain't broke don't fix it.
-
do i have to reformat my laptop to install it? no gpu switching. so not worth it..
-
nope to reformatting drive. all i did was download from apple site & ran it. everything went smoothly.
-
Finally, the microphone works in Skype and Steam. =.=;;
-
i dont mean to be rude but the microphone worked before.
-
Anyone can download and install RW-Everything in their Windows 7 installation?
It can give you a rough idea of their ACPI inside Windows. -
Yeah well, a lot of other people care, they know it, and were definitely a tad slow in releasing the update.
-
*IF* the Tablet rumours are true, then it only makes sense they focused their attention on it before working on an update to Bootcamp.
-
This is what i want also. No 9400m in Windows =
-
With W7 as awesome as it is, making nice with Windows fans per updating the bootcamp will only net an end result of more Macs being sold.
-
My mistake, I had tried the microphone when I first bought it and steam/skype never worked for me. But it does now! ^.^
-
yeah, i completely agree with you. I will buy an mac again if they do good bootcamp support. For the time being, i have no intention of buying a mac for my next computer.
-
As much as my love my mac, I find myself on W7 99.9% of the time (mostly because I game and it's a hassle to get windows games working in OSX but it would be awesome!). I love the design, but if I find a PC that is better, I would switch in a heart beat.
-
I wonder how well windows 7 will run on a mac, the mbp was the fastest laptop to run vista ( http://www.pcworld.com/article/136649-3/in_pictures_the_most_notable_notebooks_of_2007.html) so I bet it will run w7 great aswell.
Ps: They also tested vista on the mbp vs alienware and it's still better Oo -
Or even better, not needing bootcamp at all! Sigh, I can dream, can't I?
I'm glad you got your Mic working now Kamzu, that's great! But you can always take a look at the HP Envy, or even a lot of the Asus Models. The Asus have great build quality and warranty, I love them. Great value for the money too.
-
Mac don't need bootcamp to boot Windows OS Vista SP1 and above since they introduce native EFI boot.
I was hoping someone can provide me with a Macbook RW-Everything Report so I can see what is missing and attempt to patch it(ACPI) but no one is interested. -
Angelic, that's exactly what I'm looking into! What I'll miss most about the MBP is the trackpad haha. That's the part where Apple got more right than anyone else.
To Student:
The MBP could always run W7. I've been running W7
ro x64 on mine since day one. =D
-
I would have done it but i'm quite busy with assignments atm. Maybe someone else could help you here.
-
Actually, lots of people have been having trouble with the microphone and audio output on the Mid '09 MBP with the Cirrus chips.
I will gladly help you out, give me a couple days. Unfortunately, I doubt they did anything positive with their ACPI implementation.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Vista & Win 7 only boot natively on UEFI machines and not Apple's flavor. When loaded on a Mac, BIOS emulation is always used, no?
Either way I'm glad Apple kept their promise, albeit a bit late. -
You are right in saying Macs EFI is not UEFI (I shouldn't be saying this on a Mac section but it is not as updated Macs uses EFI 1.1 while UEFI uses 2.X)
Anyway it(Vista SP1 above) is able to boot on both because they use the same GPT partitioning format. -
Does the Bootcamp update benefit users of VmWare Fusion and Parallels immediately?
Or do users of those means to run Windows 7 have to wait for VmWare to make similar updates? -
If we get i5 MBP updates next week I will sell my M17x.
I have an extra copy of win7 sitting on my shelf. All I need windows for is games. -
You could alway get W7 working, it just required more effort than it does today.
And yes, my old uMBP ran w7 wonderfully. I needed more GPU muscle than the9600m GT. -
You wouldn't, but many Mac users would.
A lot of people are putting windows 7 on their Macs, it would make sense for them to make the experience as 'PC' as possible
-
Adding support for win7 in boot camp is fixing an important feature. It probably took next to no effort at all.
Snow Leopard is awesome. On my uMBP is was awesome. On my iMac it is awesome.
I agree that Snow Leopard is better than w7 in every way, but Windows has its uses (like for gaming). -
I just don't get it. I'm certainly not upset, it's really more frustrating. I see more threads from people daily saying "I use Windows exclusively on my Mac". "How do install Windows without Bootcamp, I want to get rid of OS X". Why is that happening? I just don't get PC people coming here and preaching that you can get so much more on a PC notebook for less money, but then we see more people willing to spend the money on a Macintosh, buy an extra copy of Windows 7 and run it nearly full time. People say Mac users buy form over function. No. The OS is what I buy. But why are so many of the Windows users buying form over function.
My main issue is Snow Leopard needs attention. Windows drivers for bootcamp was no emergency. That's an extra feature that Macs can do, but Windows doesn't come installed on Macs, Snow Leopard does and Apple needs to focus attention on that. The Java update is far behind the Windows version and that sux. -
Everyone please keep to the topic at hand:
Apple updates today: BootCamp 3.1 win7 & Flash
Thank you. -
Not necessary. VM software use different drivers all together.
-
still no word on the ACPI drivers and the battery life?
-
Not sure about updates to the ACPI drivers, but battery life definitely is no better on my 13" MBP
Trackpad is still a bit "accelerated" but is definitely less jumpy.
-
hmm, that's to bad, I guess apple won't get my business. (I need windows!, but I like apples designs)
-
Me for instance, I did it because "I can".
I like to tinker and experiment, and the journey was far more fun then the destination.
It just so happens that I haven't bothered to go back to OS X after installing windows.
Others have said that it's pretty painless to install win7 on macs, and so I think the bootcamp update is just a formality. 95% of computer users are just your "average joes" that don't like nor know how, to tinker with computers, and having official support just opens up the market to more potential buyers, if you see what I mean. -
Does anyone else have issues keeping that annoying keyboard backlight OFF. I will turn as low as it will go, but it will creep back up.
Does the track pad still seem weird to anyone? Like it half acknowledges my clicks some times. -
These are exactly the issues people complain about when they install Windows on their Mac.
-
I got this crazy theory apple will not fix them, simply to add something to annoy us with.
-
Or to make you switch to OS X which is what a Mac was made for.
-
You'd be only annoying yourself on this matter. A Macintosh computer comes with it's own Mac OS operating system which Apple fully supports as they should. Installing any other operating system is optional and Apple is not required to give you the best experience on an unsupported OS that optionally installed, why should they? They need to put more attention towards what the Mac is designed to run which is Mac OS X.
If you feel that you are getting annoyed by how Apple provides drivers for Windows, then you are using a Mac for the wrong reasons. If you have a ton Windows software and you have no intention of really using the Mac OS daily, then buy a Windows PC and you'll get the experience you deserve.
-
Apple also fully supports bootcamp, do they not? They also have a responsibility to keep that fully updated and working correctly, or else they are just purposefully trying to steer the Mac users to OS X. I think the "Mac shoud only run OS X" argument is dumb, no offense. Many people view the Macbook as just another PC, and should be able to run Windows correctly. Or else, what's the point?
-
Well, not everything runs in your perfect world.
-
I think you missed my point, no offense. If they aren't going to keep bootcamp working correctly, they should just drop it. Thanks for the sarcasm.
-
Boot Camp is working correctly. It allows you to install and run Windows on a Mac.
-
From here: http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/boot_camp_install-setup.pdf
"Apple does not provide support for installing or running Microsoft Windows software. To find help for Windows issues, go to www.microsoft.com/windows." -
Either make bootcamp work (lighted keyboard, mouse issues, seriously apple those are two obvious issues, other then that I have noticed any) or drop it.
90%+ of my time on my mbp is in OSX, I use windows partition for stuff OSX can not do (help troubleshoot a windows issue on another computer, etc). OSX without a doubt needs some fixes (F8 key on a mbp always opens Itunes), but its just small stuff like bootcamp, or what seems like small stuff. -
Well, part of your post I'll agree with that Apple needs to work on OS X, but I wish the F8 key linked to iTunes was all there was. Java is so far behind and it inhibits me from doing certain web tasks which require the latest Java 6.
Your other post in terms of Either make Bootcamp (basically perfect in your words) work, because it DOES work, or drop it. That wouldn't make any sense. While we're at it, Microsoft might as well drop Mac Office since they've dumbed it down to ruin the Mac user's experience. They want to keep people on Windows so it's a strategy of sabotage. Apple most certainly isn't in business to keep a Windows user's experience perfect on Bootcamped Windows. They provide drivers enough to run it and that's all they should be doing. Apple designs their computers to run Mac OS X, not Windows. If you notice the keyboard is designed for Mac OS X. Other features of the Mac can't even be used in Windows such as the ambient light sensor and full multi touch gestures or the 7 hour battery life.
You shouldn't be so annoyed about not having perfect Windows drivers if you only use Windows on your Mac 10% of the time. Lemme guess, you use it for something really important like gaming?
-
+1 Rep For a nice concrete find!
-
He said that in response to my post about whether or not they fully support bootcamp. They obviously DO, they just won't provide support for any problems with Windows itself.
-
Apple will assist you with Boot Camp assistant and installing the drivers. After that, it's a Windows issue for which they won't provide support.
