I'm sure you've all heard about Apple's new education promo. You buy a new Mac and they give you a $200 MIR good towards the purchase of an iPod. Let's say you get that $200 iPod Nano, which is now free after MIR. Can you return it to an Apple Store and get [in essence] $200 off the price of your Mac?
-
-
you can sell it, I'm pretty sure you can't do that...
-
Yeah, I'm pretty sure if you simply returned it, the mail-in rebate would be voided.
Not sure how they normally handle it, but I assume that all mail-in rebate deals have a way to deal with the obvious problem of someone buying the product, getting the mail in rebate, and then returning it.
But yeah, as easyeye said, you could probably sell it for close to full retail price if you don't open up, which does make it like an additional $200 off or so, which is pretty nice. -
I'd like to avoid using eBay...maybe there's some other way to sell/return it somewhere.
-
I'd just try and sell it on various Buy/Sell/Trade forums....... here, maybe MacNN forums, MacRumors forums, iLounge forums, etc. Shouldn't be hard to find someone somewhere that would want to buy it. I would imagine as long as you dropped maybe $20 off the price or something it's worth it to someone.

one word........ walmart
-
Since he'll get it sealed... oh my ... I think I know what I'll do with mine.
-
That's actually a good idea.
-
you could try craigslist to sell it

Sorry guys, but this rebate is no different than any other rebate. It requires you to cut out the UPC from the box.
Regardless of how lax a store's return policy is, you're out of your mind if you think anyone's going to accept an open box as a return without a receipt. -
Yeah I just figured out that the rebate requires you to cut out the UPC with the cardboard backing.
Hm, I guess I could give my old iPod to my brother and keep the new one for myself. -
I've never had to cut the UPC off anything for a rebate...
Hmm. -
I normally have; had to for a Sony Vaio rebate, for example.
And yeah, you need to for the Nano rebate:
-
hmmm would it be possible to use my UPC label from my moms ipod and keep the one I buy unopened?
-
prob not, i think you need to show the receipt and they match up the UPCs there.
-
Yeah; they ask you to send your receipt and the UPC, and they would need to match.
-
I did it for my current core duo last year with the same promotion, you need to cut out the UPC code from the packaging.
-
Could always go to a store, hang around the ipod section, and try to sell the rebate to someone.
Just sell if for like $10-20 cheaper. In the end you get money and it sames them a little. -
You wouldn't really easily be able to sell just the rebate to someone; the rebate works by sending the UPC from the iPod along with your receipt with the iPod and the purchased MBP.
-
I was about to make this point. You have to cut the box up and, without a UPC, there's not right-minded store in the US that will take it back. Hell, even Costco would reject you if you cut the UPC out and tried to return the product! The secondary market is the only place for these iPods.
-
I guess the question becomes; what would be the reasonable price to sell an essentially "new" iPod with its UPC code cut off? I mean, how much would one have to knock off the price to sell it to someone. Clearl it can't be sold for just $200, since someone would just as soon buy a brand new one for that. And they probably wouldn't buy it for, say, $190, just to save $10. But the question is, what's the reasonable threshhold.
I figure this is an important question for anyone planning on buying the iPod with the sole intention of reselling it to essentially get an additional $200 (or as close to it as possible) discount on top of the normal $200 educational discount. -
btw apple rebates quicker than any other company or is it gonna take months?
-
Sell the rebate to somebody in a store? LOL I seriously hope you were joking...that just conjured up an image of some dude selling car stereos out of the trunk of his car.
I think some of you guys will want to go read the rebate form. Although I suppose it would make sense that you haven't if you haven't bought a MBP yet.
Considering how most people can get some sort of educational discount on their ipods (which is ~10% off) you're going to probably have to under-sell that price. I would say selling it for around $175 wouldn't be unreasonable. You'll be saving them a few bucks on taxes as well.
-
Usually like 1-2 months from what I've heard. I think as with most companies they use another company that actually handles the rebate process, so it's not going to really be any slower or faster.
-
Actually, I'm starting to think I may just keep the iPod and printer. Seeing as the Nano is flash-based, I could definitely use it in the gym or while running, and I'll be needing a printer in college anyway.
After it's all said and done, I guess I am getting an overall $300 discount on my complete setup.
-
Yeah, if you don't have one already, it's a really nice little player. I use mine when working out, and also have the Nike+ kit to use it to keep track of my running, which works really well.
-
What printer? Didn't see anything about a printer deal...

Thanks!!
